Adoption

If you don't mind sharing, what is the timeline for bringing

your child home? I hope that isn't rubbing salt in the wounds of some. I just know I've seen some of you on here before I even started posted and I was curious. I am not all that firmiliar with some of the international adoptions.

  • Because  the domestic placements  of non-white newborns are going so quickly with our agency right now, we are kind of actually taking our time on some things but here is where we stand:

4-6 weeks - homestudy ( which we plan to have completed by mid-march)

3 weeks for our profile to be completed by our agency as all adoptive parent profiles look identical except for pictures, information, BM letter and answers to questions (can be done at same time as the homestudy)

1 day to 9 months for a match, right now matching is taking place same day to within 30 days

  • I think the average for Haiti is around 2 years. We are nearing that. We are now just waiting for our files to exit the MInistry of the Interior. Then we get our passports and visas.
  • We are working on about 9 months to the day that we decided to start talking to agencies to the day our BM is due.  We were matched within 2 weeks of being available.
  • We selected our agency one year ago.  They held a drawing a week later and 5 couples were picked to enter their domestic newborn program.  We were not selected, but picked as 1 of 2 alternates.

No one dropped out of the program, so we had to wait until July to begin our home study.  Home study was done by the end of September (delayed a month by a fire at our agency) and we began waiting by October 1st.

A short "wait" is 3-6 months.  Most people seem to match at 6-9 months.  Rarely do people have to renew their home studies at 12 months.  The people who have been waiting the longest (2 years) are older and have children.

Matches are done within the last trimester.  Baby may go home with us, or into cradle care for 2-6 weeks.

    What a pregnancy!

  • We are 10 months in, from the time we sent in our initial application.  We hope to have our paperwork submitted to Peru by March.  From that point, it may take up to 8 months before we are approved to adopt and up to another year before we receive a referral.  Everything will move much quicker if we are approved to parent a child (or two!) from the waiting children's list.
  • Our agency said 6 months to a year. We will see......we are actually doing domestic though.

  • We are adopting from Korea and just recently got our referral for a baby boy.  It was almost 18 months from initial application to referral - a little bit on the long side for our agency.  We are currently looking at another 3 months until we can travel.  On some of the other boards that I belong to, families typically go from application to placement in 1 - 2 years.
  • Our agency says 6-9 to match from the point your file goes "live". We are just now to the point we'll start "counting".

  • Hi! I just wanted to respond and tell you your little guy is SO adorable! We adopted our little guy from Korea and he came home May 2005! He's 4 now and a TOTAL handful, but we love it! :) Congrats again and good luck!
  • We're nearly 8 months in and our dossier is being translated starting tomorrow, should be in the hands of the orphanage in a week or 2 and then we wait for a referral.  We have been given 2 - 8 months as a range for referral but I think a lot of it depends on openess to age range etc.  We're open to an infant under 12 months, twins under 12 months or an infant + a toddler sib group so no matter how we're matched, we're hoping our variety of openness will help the process,
