For the first couple of months, DD would only go to sleep either while nursing or while she was in her swing. We also pretty much co-slept that whole time becuase if I put her in her bassinet she would wake up...she would only stay asleep if she was next to me. For some reason, she has just in the last week or so started to be ok in the bassinet.
We had the same problem and co-sleeping was the only option for us.
After DS started daycare, they got him to sleep in his crib by swaddling, which we figured he didn't like because he would kick out of it before. All of the sudden, he decided he liked being swaddled. Now we get him to sleep in his bassinet for at least half of the night when he's in a tight swaddle.
That's what we did..Do you swaddle him? DD would only sleep in her carseat for 5 weeks. We'd try her bassinet everyday for naptime and sometimes at night. If she fussed, we took her out. Finally, one night at about 5 weeks, she went in and stayed w/o fussing/crying. She was swaddled though.
Have you tried a sleep positioner that has him at a slant? Or on his side?
do you use a soother? Maybe that will calm him down.
Also, do you keep the bassinet by your bed? reaching in and just rubbing his tummy instead of taking him out might help him.
Soother as in a white noise machine? Or something else?
We do have the bassinet near the bed, but rubbing his tummy only works for about 2 extra minutes of sleep.
I meant a pacifier, but yeah a white noise machine might help! Sometimes we turn on a noise machine that mimics the sound of a heartbeat. That ALWAYS works on her.

Yup, we have the paci too. Maybe cosleeping is the only option at this point....
DS would only sleep when held or in his carseat, He spent a lot of time in his carseat in the?beginning. At about 6 weeks we finally got him in his crib.

DD was the same way the first couple of weeks. We could not lay her down or she'd wake up screaming. We didn't feel comfortable co-sleeping, so we would take turns sleeping in a chair while holding her (a big ol' comfy chair in our bedroom sitting area). Once she got past those first couple of weeks, she did much much better but still had to be swaddled.

Well this is the only thing that works for us. I pump bottles and I feed her while she's laying in her boppy newborn lounger in her bassinet. Then she falls asleep after eating her bottle. It really helps that we don't have to move her because I think that's what wakes her up. She loves being held. Right now she wakes up every couple of hours, but I just give her another bottle and we repeat. Every time she wakes up, I just pump while she's drinking her bottle. It's really easy because she tilts her head to the side and the boppy just holds her bottle for her, so I don't have to.
When your holding him is he up against your chest? He may be a baby who wants to sleep on his belly. I know this is not recommended. Have you tried putting him on his side in a positioner pillow maybe?
In the hospital she was constantly swaddled and in her bassinet a large majority of the time so she has no issue with sleeping in a bassinet. We still swaddle her at home, but she will sleep in the bassinet swaddled or unswaddled.
You might want to try a tight swaddle and a white noise machine or a pacifier. We use all three and it works for us...although the noise machine seems to work better on me than on her. =P
We have the same problem and are on night 3 using a miracle blanket. We're still working on it, but it has helped tremendously. We used to have to hold her for at least 30 minutes before we could put her down...now we can put her down after 10 minutes.
Give it time. Your baby spent 9 months sleeping inside you, so it's understandable that he wants to snuggle. My DS would only sleep on me or next to me for the first three weeks, after that he transitioned to a crib in our room with absolutely no problem. The biggest key was getting him deeply asleep before putting him down- just hold him 5 minutes longer than you think you need to, and then put him down. Good luck!

We let our son sleep with us for the first few weeks and then started putting him in the crib after we rocked him to sleep. At first he'd wake up after 10 minutes every time, but pretty quickly started spending the night in his bed. He still wouldn't do nap time in his bed, but I kept trying and now we're doing naps and nights in the crib. I think if you want your baby in his crib you'll just have to be persistent for a while.
