Babies: 9 - 12 Months

First night of Ferber....

Happened earlier and he only cried for 36 minutes.  The longest 36 mimutes of mine and DH's life, but still, could have been worse.

Has anyone ever had a second night that was worse than the first?  Thanks.

  • 36 minutes straight????? Dude.

  • I doubt that it was 36 minutes straight. If you do Ferber, you go in at intervals. The first night, the intervals are very short - 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and then ten minutes. Ten is the longest you will wait to go in.
  • Checked at 3 minutes, quieted then started crying again when I left.  DH went in 5 minutes later, he quieted, and started crying again.  During the next few 10 minute intervals he stopped once or twice but started up again.  But yeah, Ferber is letting your kid cry a little.  Hence why it blew.

  • Thanks, KB. I haven't had to do Ferber so I'm not familiar with the method.
  • And to the OP: When you do Ferber, the same person should do the routine and check-ins. I don't remember where I read this in the book, but I do remember it.

Toosdai, you're welcome. It can seem confusing if you don't know about what the method entails :O)

  • That's pretty good for the first night. We're starting tomorrow and I'm really hoping it works out because this is our last resort.

  • as long as you're consistent, it gets better every night
  • Consistency is key, I did read that the baby could get 'worse' the 2nd or 3rd night, honestly we had to give it a full week or so, but she didn't cry for long. She still cries/whines when we put her to bed but it isn't anything dramatic like when we started this process.

Just to give you incentive though at 5ish months we started she was up every 1-2 hours, no joke, at 6 months she was sleeping 4-6 hr blocks without a peep and now at 7 months she STTN 10-11 hours and shes BF so it can happen!    I hear ya about the longest 35 mins of your life though.

  • Here is my log from my first 3 nights/days of Ferber.  I would highly recommend creating a log.  It helped us so much!  It really does get easier each day.  The first week is hard.  Most nights by son now goes down without any crying and only wakes 2 times for a binkie replacement.  Good luck to you and remember to stay strong!   Wednesday Night
