We are having a hard time deciding. We don't want to spend the extra money and have to replace the infant seat later, but we also want the convenience of a baby carrier. . .we're not sure yet.
we ended up with a chicco infant seat. it was originally my first choice because it has pretty good ratings and reviews and was in our price range.
when we got to bru, we almost ended up with a graco bc dh LOVED it and graco is a pretty good company, but of course i got my way and we registered for the chicco.
as far as convertibles, we'll probably end up buying that later on. it didnt seem practical because they look really heavy and we would be leaving it at daycare in case he picks her up or if i do.
I registered for a travel system as well. But I also registered for a convertible seat for when the baby gets bigger. Several of my friends with babies didn't get the "next size up" and were surprised how soon they needed it.
we went with an infant for the ease and convenience of being able to slide the seat out of the base without waking baby.
After speaking with most of our friends who have children, DH decided that this would be a MAJOR criteria in deciding what carseat to go with. We are getting the Orbit.
The infant seat is great when baby is little and sleeping all the time because if baby falls asleep in the car, you can just lift it from its base and carry the baby along without waking him. You can also use the infant seat more easily during travel - it snaps into a snap-n-go or travel system, you can use it easily in a cab (with no base, just the seat belt looped through) etc. The downside is you can only use it so long, but since my daughter was small I was able to use the infant seat for over 14 months!
We ended up doing both. We have the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio infant seat that goes with our stroller, but also opted to get a convertible car seat (Britax Marathon). Because the extra base for the Peg was $80, we decided that it would be best to go ahead and skip the additional base and just get the convertible for DH's car. We won't be taking his car all that often, so we figured that we'd save the money on the base because we wanted to get 2 convertible car seats eventually anyway.
For the infant seat, we were deciding between the Peg and the Chicco Cortina travel system. We liked the infant seats equally (they both get similar safety ratings), but liked the Peg Pliko P3 stroller much better than the Cortina stroller.
I'm debating this right now. With our first, we bought an infant seat with the travel system. It worked fairly well although I bought a snap n' go stroller almost immediately bc the other stroller was too bulky (I couldn't put groceries in my car if the stroller was in there). This time around, I'm debating whether or not to get a convertible instead.
My logic so far is this:
-it will be summer so I won't have to worry about taking baby into cold
-I will have a 19 month old as well and I'm thinking it won't work to be carrying a car seat and trying to coral an independent walker in a busy parking lot
-I'm thinking that it would be easier to get a sling for the baby and use my umbrella stroller for DD. Later on, I could get a double stroller- maybe the sit and stand kind?
DH did make the point that we will probably have to get another car seat for his car and maybe we will make that one a reg. infant seat. Still working out the bugs but I'm thinking convertible is the way we're going.?
We registered for both just for the purpose of being able to take baby in the stroller without waking him up and able to carry him in and out of the car much easier.
We're doing both. We are making our final decision on the infant seat this week (Graco Snugride or Chicco Keyfit 30) and then we are going with the Britax Roundabout.
The infant seat will be all for convenience when baby is still small.
Def. the infant seat so you can transport the baby from the car to where ever you are going. They are also nice at restaurants and grocery stores because they fit in the carts and highchairs or booth. I like the infant seats that go up to 30 lbs, otherwise babies tend to outgrow them around 6 months. My son was a big baby and he was fine in his Graco Safeseat until I bought a convertible at 11 months. Also, the convertibles don't recline as much as the the infant seats, so when they fall asleep in the rear facing position (which they must be in until they are at least 1 year and 20 lbs) the baby's head falls forward and looks really uncomfortable.
With my DS, we opted for a convertible right off the bat.
This was good for a few reasons:
- he was 9 pounds at birth and grew quickly. Would have outgrown the infant seat in under 3 months or something like that.
- I hated watching so many women struggle carrying the infant carrier. It adds so much more weight and strain to an already beat up & exhausted body...didn't think I'd like that very much.
- When I didn't want to put him in a sling or carry him, we had a very nice Bumbleride stroller that fully reclined (with the foot muff) for the fall/winter months that I could push him in.
Not to say it was foolproof or perfect: in the very cold winter, we had to bundle him up in a full snowsuit. This was the biggest PITA.
To be honest, he got so used to being moved while he was sleeping early on, we could usually move him from car, to sling, to car, to crib in the same trip to the grocery store without him waking up for very long --if at all.
Now that I am due again in June, sooo excited that we have two convertible car seats, one for DS and one that our little junebug can use. I won't have to deal with the pesky cold weather issue this time around. It has been very cost effective (and for anyone who is a bit of a environmental nut) we ended up producing less waste this way--infant carriers can only be used for such a short time and carseats in general aren't recommended to be given secondhand or used secondhand, and then they all just go into a big old landfill. But that is just one thing that is important to me--I realize not everyone thinks this way....lol. Oh, and incase anyone is wondering, we have the Britax Marathon and a Britax Roundabout.

THIS is the stroller part we are getting:
And HERE is the coordinating infant carrier.
