I have had this conversation and no one agrees with me till i prove it to them....what do you think.
My husbands name is william as is his grandpa
I think Mack is another name for william.
There is a sheryl crowe song that says...you say your name is william...but im sure its bill will or mack or buddy.
also interesting...his william grandpa is called buddy??!!
A)is mack an alternate name for william
B)do you like mackey for a boy name
Re: other names for william...mack??
Never heard or thought of Mack as another name for William. Although, I know that song lyric and just never thought about it and took it to heart!
If Mack is another name for William then I guess it's one of the random, senseless things such as D!ck being another name for Richard.

is this serious? no, I do not interpret the song as saying mack and buddy are nicknames for william. but i'm not sure if you're joking or not.
and are you looking for other names for william or validation for mack/mackey?
I think of Mac(k)as a nn for people w/ last names beginning w/ Mc or Mac- like MacKenzie or McDonald.
I think it's a cute nn though...
I don't think that Sheryl Crow was telling you that "Mack" is a nickname for William. It's just a song lyric. She probably just wanted something to flow or rhyme in that part of the song.
Mackey? No, sorry.
William is our boy name and we were going to use Liam off the bat to avoid nicknames like Bill or Billy or Willy.
A) I think you can use whatever name for William you want...whatever makes sense or whatever NN comes about after he's born.
I don't know that I think Sheryl Crowe is the definitive source for the origins of nicknames, but I guess it's possible. (Like Jack being a nn for John.)
My uncle's name is William, and we call him Babe. My other uncle is named Henry, and HIS nickname is Bud. No idea where these came from. Probably just my grandma being cute (all their nns rhymed. The other one is Bob.)
Mackey for a boy's name is NMS. My friend's border collie is named Mackie, and I think it's cute. For a dog.
Sometimes family names that start with Mc/Mac are shorted to Mack or Mick, maybe that would be a good place to start?
