2nd Trimester

Not sure if I feel the baby

Okay, so I am 17 weeks pregnant and I still am not sure if what I feel is the baby or not.  I am feeling kind of left out because I thought by this time it should be obvious to me if the baby is moving.  Let me explain what I feel: it's like someone is poking me in the stomach and it usually is on the side or close to my pelvic bone and not in the middle.  It's not a comfortable feeling.  It kind of hurts/bothers me when it happens.

So could this be the baby?

I've read others saying it feels like bubbles, popcorn popping or a fish moving inside, but I don't get that feeling.

Re: Not sure if I feel the baby

  • sorry, i wouldnt know yet.. what i feel that i think might be baby is like something is twitching inside of my.. pretty deep inside.. the same feeling you get when my your eye twitches but its inside..

  • The times I have felt pokes they didn't hurt/bother me... they were kinda dull feeling. I'm not sure if baby kicks/movements would feel hurtful. That may be RLP but then again I don't know! Give it time.. you will feel baby soon! I still don't feel it regularly and I have to really be paying attention at times to feel it. Drink some OJ or eat something sugary and go lay on your left side and focus on your body. You might feel some little nudges from baby!
  • Who knows. I felt so many odd things going on in my belly. Just with in the last month- have I been able to really feel her. I did notice that what I felt was nothing like what people explained. I think- if they are moving/kicking- you will know what it is... Don't base it off of what people say it should feel like...
  • Do you know if you have an anterior or posterior placenta? If you have an anterior placenta (placenta is in front of baby), the feelings may be different and you don't feel them as early. I didn't really feel DS until 23 weeks. It felt like a small spasm or twitch. Towards the end it was more like rolls.

  • I have felt pretty much everything so far, ranging from bubbles to twitching, to light jabs, to tightening, to feeling like my stomach is going to growl but it doesn't, to feeling like my stomach is doing flip flops like I'm riding on a tilt-a-whirl.  I honestly have no idea which of it is the baby and which isn't, but I'm pretty sure at least some of it has to have been the baby.  I got so worried about it I talked to my OB and he agreed that at least some of it must be the baby moving, and heard strong kicks when he listened to the baby with the doppler.

I also usually feel all those feelings more slightly to my left side.  Occassionally I'll get some of it going on right in the center, and maybe like once or twice I've felt something on the right side.  Also, driving in the car really seems to get all the feelings going...which is kinda weird.

  • What I believe are kicks are like an internal  organ twitched (like they said above).  When she flips/rolls it almost feels like when your stomach falls out like when if you jump off something or ride a roller coaster.  I never felt like it felt like popcorn popping or butterflies.  In fact, I was so centered on what I "thought" those movements felt like it took me a while to realize the twitch was a kick/punch.
  • I didnt feel anything until I was 20 weeks. Everything before that I just thought was gas. But when you feel it you know it, it feels like the baby is flicking you, and makes a ripple inside your belly.
  • Don't worry... I just went in for my big u/s and told them that I'm not sure if I felt the baby yet or not, and they told me my placenta is in a different spot which is normal, so I probably won't feel him until 24 weeks or so. You have time! Everyone starts feeling their baby at different times :)
  • awh... you will feel the baby soon. I didn't really feel the baby until about a good 20 weeks or even 21 weeks.

I couldn't tell right away either.  I have a lot of poking in my pelvic area now...i guess it depends on where she is sitting at the moment...not all the time...I usually feel her on the side but today i have felt her way low in the pelvic area. but you have a lot of time!!! but if its hurting you you should just go get checked out to make sure. I have a lot of pressure down there and i actually went into the doctor to make sure everything was okay and everything was ....

  • The poking that's seems uncomfortable could also be round ligament pain associated with your growing uterus. I felt that a lot at 17 weeks (and still do). Here's a webmd article about it

I'm sure you'll feel movement soon. At first, I only felt it when I was sitting very still, but now I'm starting to notice it during the day when I'm doing things, too. It made it even cooler to see him on the ultrasound for the first time moving around and kicking - I even felt one while I saw it happen, crazy!

  • 19 weeks is when I first felt the popcorn feeling. But before that I had something close to what you are feeling.?

    ?

Keep your head up! Things will feel different soon!?

  • W/my first I didn't feel the baby until 20 weeks...I'm not sure about the uncomfortable poking feeling. It will happen soon! Don't worry. DH still hasn't felt our baby yet even though I feel it all the time and it is very active...I just keep hoping he will soon.
