Help... tell me about mucus plugs.

TMI so bear with me... 

For 2 days I have had brown globs of discharge.  At first it was a small ball, last night I had a longish strand, and I just had an even longer strand in the bathroom.  It is definitely mucus- thick and stretchy, and tinged brown.

 I have placenta previa, so at first I thought it was old blood from a bleed I had 2 weeks ago.  Now I'm concerned that it is possibly my mucus plug.  Would this be normal at all at 23 weeks?

I have also had menstrual-like cramps all night, but I thought it was a normal pregnancy thing. 

If I call my doctor's office I'm sure they will send me to L & D to be safe.  WWYD?

    I dont know, but probably go to L&D or page your doc...good luck

    my mucus plugs were always pinkish and slimy looking but not brown.  i had dark brown stringy things in my early 2nd trimester and the dr said it was old blood so maybe it is the old blood from your bleeding 2 wks ago.  but maybe i'd call the dr to be safe.

    I would definitely call! It sounds like your MP to me. Better to be safe!

    OK, I called and the Doctor said to wait and see if the crampiness goes away.  He said it would be very rare for it to be my mucus plug this early, but to call if I get anymore.  Thanks for convincing me to call... I hate calling after hours.
