3rd Trimester

I think I upset my mom re: induction

My mom lives 4 hours away. She is planning on coming to stay for a week when baby is born. If baby doesn't come before Friday, I will be induced that morning. My mom just told me she put in her vacation time for Friday and the following week. I asked her if she would be coming into town Friday morning. She said nope, Thursday night because she is afraid I would have baby before she got here Friday morning. I told her that Friday morning would probably be better since H and I will probably want to spend Thursday night alone and chilling together since it will be our last night together before baby comes. She sounded really upset. It is totally unliker her as she is normally pretty concerned w/ not intruding or being bothersome. I did tell her that even though I am being induced it could still take 12+ hours like a regular birth. Why do I feel bad for telling her not to come until Friday?

  • is it her 1st grandchild?  my mom just told me she wants to be called when the first painful contraction happens.  and she's only an hour away!!

  • Don't feel bad. She's probably just nervous and wants to be sure to be there! Do what's best for you and DH, she'll understand eventually
  • I'm sure she understands.  I think its great you and DH will be alone together Thursday night.
  • I dont know, that shouldnt have upset her, especially if she is normally so understanding. wait a day or two then call her and talk to her about it. :)
  • I hear you...my mom is also coming to stay for an indefinite amount of time and its kind of stressing me out because I think she may get on my nerves more than help me. Its going to be all new for us adjusting to having a family and she will basically be living here for a while. My dad died a year ago and she is widowed and basically left with nothing, then the house caught on fire a while back and she didnt have homeowners insurance. So yeah I feel pretty selfish that Im not crazy about her being here for a long time. She only stayed with my sister in FL for 2 weeks and she started all this family drama and rumors...I can only imagine what all is going to happen once she is here to critique me 24/7....*sigh*

yep - it's her first. And, I know she is super excited about it. I guess she really is worried that she will miss the birth. But, inductions do take just as long right? I mean I probably wouldn't have the baby by 10 am if I check in at 6 would I?

yeah, I"m gonna go with it's the 1st grandchild.  My mom's brother is dying of cancer and I had to convince her it was ok to fly to GA this week to visit with him and she flew back this morning to be here after my dr appt "just in case".

  • Yeah, I'm sure it's just a case of it being her first grandchild and she doesn't want to miss it.  Also, you're HER baby, and I'm sure she wants to be there for you the night before... I think it's hard for moms to let go and let our DHs do their job in this - it's hard for them to realize that your family now is your H, and not necessarily her.

  • I told my mom the same thing.  She lives 5 hours away and is coming tomorrow (being induced Sunday) and staying until Tuesday.  Luckily MIL lives less than a mile from us so my mom will be staying there every night.  MIL kept saying my mom will probably want to stay with me tomorrow night, and I was like uh no, it's mine and DH's last night alone together and we'd like to just spend it alone.  My mom has been anxiously waiting for me to call when I went into labor, but obviously it never happened.  She'll stay at my house Sunday night to take care of our dog, and then come to the hospital Monday morning to say hi (Im only starting with cervidil Sunday night).  She wants to see me before they give me the pitocin because she had a really bad reaction to it and wants to make sure nothing happens to me.  Then she'll probably go back to my house and just wait for us to call when I'm getting closer since we only live 10 min from the hospital.

I know our mothers just want to be there for us and I think its hard for them when they may not feel as needed since we have our wonderful DHs to help us.

  • It's a tough call. I don't blame you on wanting to be alone w/ DH. I'm sure she will get over it.

  • My induction took days...hate to break it to you.

BUT like my mom says...we don't have babies very easily lol.

  • I don't think you were out of line at all - it's a totally normal thing for you to want to spend your last night with DH.  Maybe a compromise could be for your mom to come that night but stay at a hotel.  Or maybe that would offend her more - hard to know without knowing your mom.

  • My induction took 43 hours, so....the average is 20 hours - she'll have PLENTY of time.?

  • I had to jump in. My induction only took 5 hours. I mean I got to the hospital at 3 pm, pitocin in me at 3:30 and had her and 8:20 pm... sometimes they go really fast too!

  • My induction was really fast too. They broke my water at 8, started pit at 9, and I gave birth at 12:10 (would have been sooner, I was ready to push at 11:30 but had to wait til the dr arrived at noon before given the go-ahead).

That said, I'd still want to spend the last night with just DH. We actually had no one at the hospital with us... and my whole family is local. We called them all after DD was born and they were there at the hospital by 3 or 4pm but it was nice to have some time with just us and DD.
