Cutting Food Up Question

I still cut everything up into itty bitty pieces for DS.  I tried to give him a graham cracker this evening, and I thought I would see what would happen if I just gave him a whole cracker.  Well, he took HUGE bites, didn't chew them up, and then gagged on them.  Is this normal? Should I be giving him whole things so that he can learn how to take small bites and chew?  Or should I still be giving him pieces of things that are so small he can't choke on them?

What things to you give to your DC whole and what things do you cut up?

Thanks!

Re: Cutting Food Up Question

  • I still cut up all DDs food also.  However I do give her a whole graham cracker and other snacky stuff like that and rice cakes and pears.  I found that the cracker breaks apart and disolves pretty quickly so we've neverhad a problem.  Although several times she has stuffed her face (either with cut up food or whole food, no difference) and kinda gagged.  I'm just trying to teach her to eat slow, smaller bites, and i watch to help her.

  • At 11 months we were still cutting up, but I also practiced letting her bite off of food while I held..  Once she got used to one bite and the request to finish chewing, I would give her bigger foods.

  • I always cut up but encourage DC to learn how to bite, eat, swallow, etc by SOMETIMES letting him bite out of a banana or eat a graham cracker and I just watch him very closely.
  • That happened to my dd with a teething biscuit.  She has since learned she can't stuff the whole thing down her throat.  I think it is normal and your dc will learn in time.
  • Cheddar rice cakes are very good for teaching to bite because they break off with so little pressure. We tried toast and waffles, but he really had trouble biting that off. But once I started the rice cakes he figured it out quickly and now can bite most anything.
