Where do you bank?

We are having some major problems with BOA and want to move our money but are concerned that we will have similar problems with a bank like wachovia and WaMU, etc...We were thinking a credit union would give us better service b/c CUs are non profits. Any thoughts? Where do you bank? We are going to pull our money out today and start the process of closing our BOA accounts any recs would be appreciated.

Re: Where do you bank?

  • I've been with Wachovia since it was First Union and so far haven't had any problems. (I'm knocking on wood now.)

My parents have also used them since they were Decatur Federal, then First Union and now Wachovia without any problems.

  • I have a Wachovia acct and DH has all BOA. He also dislikes BOA. I haven't had any probelems with Wachoiva.
  • I bank at Associated Credit Union.  I left Nations Bank, which became BOA, years ago after all the obnoxious fees.  I love the credit union.

  • We bank with Wachovia. They have been purchased by Wells Fargo so you might see some changes if you decided to open an account now. DH banked with Wells a few years ago and loved them. I've been really happy with Wachovia. I've also banked at a couple of credit unions (in TX) and loved the small bank feel and personal attention that came with it.
  • I used BOA when I was in NYC, but switched to Citi when Nico and I got married because I hated BOA so much. ? I loved Citibank, but they are not down here. ? We are with BOA again, and I don't do any of the banking so I don't know if Nico has had the same issues I had.?

I do know that several times for me, my debit card would be rejected when there was plenty of money in my account and I know it happened for Nico once since we've been down here. ? Is that a BOA thing or just a general debit card issue? ? It never happened to me once with Citi. ? ?Its annoying. ?

  • We use Bank of North Georgia and love them. They are always so nice when you go in for anything. Has that small town bank feel but they are really getting pretty big. We can use the ATM's at Publix for free too.
  • i have been with wachovia for 16 years and have never had any problems.  i am hoping that doesn't change w/ the new owners, but i really like wachovia.

we have our savings with ing.

  • I think a credit union is the way to go!  We just recently switched from Wachovia to Georgia's Own Credit Union in November and have been very happy with the credit union!  Part of the reason we switched was b/c of the merger of Wachovia and Wells Fargo.  I had a auto loan through Wells Fargo and was VERY unhappy with their customer services.  Another reason for the switch has been the terrible customer service we have received lately from Wachovia.  We have also banked with BOA and hated them too.  From my experience, if you switch from BOA to another major bank you are more than likely going to run into the same problems you did with BOA.

  • I have been w/ WaMu for about 5 years and loved them.  Since JP Morgan/Chase purchased them I have noticed that the service has changed, but I've only been through the drive thru.  So far, everything else seems to be the same w/ them.  I will continue to keep my account there until they really do something to tick me off!

DH and I have our joint acct. w/ ING.  We have been VERY happy w/ them. You do need an account w/ a brick and mortar bank, in addition to ING, so you can transfer money back and forth, so not sure if that will help or not.

  • I use SunTrust and never had any problems...before them I used BOA and hated them.

  • Thanks ladies!  We do have an ING account for savings and a CD, so that will stay the same. We need to punt BOA and get a different credit card b/c we currenly have a world points visa but I'll be damned if I give them credit card business.

Michelle-we had citi in NY and LOVED them and were bummed that they are not down here. BOA sucks, they have shut off our debit cards a few times for NO reason and it's a total PITA.

  • We used to belong to a Credit Union and while the rates were good, I got very frustrated that there was only 2 ATMs I could use without having to pay ATM fees.  We now use Wachovia and also have ING accounts.  I haven't had any problems with these, but will see if anything changes now that Wells Fargo owns them.
  • i guess i am the only one that like BOA. I have been using them for about three years when i switched from Suntrust which really really really sucked. I had to get a new debit card 2 times because somehow someone got my number and was charging stuff to my account, but i LOVE BOA, I have not had any problems with them and the keep the change thing is great.

  • We use BOA and hate them and will be switching soon! We also have accounts with ING and we love them.

  • I have been banking with BOA for over 10 years and haven't had any problem except when I had the World points VISA. I was quick to pay that thing off so I didn't have to mess with it anymore.

DH WAS with WAMU, and we still had an account with them as of last week. I hate that bank... with a VERY strong passion. (for many reasons)

  • I have Wachovia crown so I don't pay any fees and have had nothing but positive things to say, but Clark Howard recommends credit unions over banks.
  • Before I met Nico, I looked at WaMu to get away from BOA. ? They are a joke. ?Did you know their free checking costs $5 a month? ?I kept asking them, "How is that free checking?" and they were just talking in circles with no answer to the question.?

Also, BOA has a 24 hour guarantee for fraudulent activity on your account. ?If you are the victim of identity theft, they guarantee the money will be back in your account in 24 hours. ? Try 2 weeks. ? I found that out when someone tried to wire $1400 to the Nation of Islam via Western Union. ?WU called me to confirm the transaction but the money was already "pending" in my account and it took 2 weeks to get it back. ?Oh and whoever also managed to buy $900 in calling cards. ? ?

  • before I married craig I used local banks, but after we got married I switched to Suntrust...dh has been with them for over 16 years...we're thinking about switching to dh's companys credit union. We'll see...I don't have a problem with suntrust. we don't have any fees or anything either.
  • We bank through USAA. It's completely online; we deposit checks either digitally with our scanner or in a postage-paid envelope.  They refund ATM fees up to $25 a month, and their customer service is first-rate!  A couple of years ago, I was getting ready to leave the country for two weeks when I noticed that my credit card was going to expire while I was gone and I hadn't gotten a new one yet.  I was leaving in 48 hours.  I called USAA and they FedExed me a new card at no charge; it was here the next morning.

  • I've been with Wachovia forever and have always had good service.  They were great when our checks were recently stolen. They refunded the $$ to us within 24 hours.  I'm not sure if all banks do that.

Also, we belong to a credit union at my work, but that's mainly for an auto loan.  We also get great service there.

  • I worked in Banking for 13 years so I have a few accounts... (I worked for BOA for a while and hated them). Right now we have accounts at Fidelity Bank (they have great rates) Emory Federal Credit Union and Georgia's Own Credit Union.

  • We have an account with BOA but rarely use it.  Basically, I consider that our daycare fund b/c I have my FSA set up to deposit in there so I just write checks for daycare out of that account.  I hate the way they show their transactions online and it always pissed me off when I was trying to balance the checkbook.  My biggest pet peeve is that when you eat at a restaurant and leave a tip, they will first post the amount w/o the tip and then like 3 days later, they will change it to reflect the tip.  Such a pita.  I actually just told DH yesterday that after I get my last 2008 FSA deposit next week, I'm switching those deposits to go to our credit union account and I'm just going to leave the BOA account as our emergency fund.  They are too difficult to deal with.  I have had an account with the Delta Credit Union since I was 15 years old.  I love them- they make everything so easy.  The ATM thing used to really bug us, but now that you can get cash back just about anywhere when you use your debit card, it's not even an issue anymore.

  • We bank with Delta Community Credit Union and love it. I was at BOA before I got married. It was okay. Hated all the outrageous fees. DH has been with DCCU for 12 years and has no problems with it. We can bank at the Lockheed CU that's right next to our house with no extra fees and we can use the Presto ATMs at Publix without a fee.

  • I used Wachovia from when I was 16 until DH and I moved to TN (they don't have any there). We use Suntrust now, and both have been very good. The only problem I had at Wachovia was in high school when I had a bank card stolen that was only supposed to be activated for ATMs. My account was overdrawn and we had to file a complaint/police report. Thebank paid me back b/c it was their fault that it was able to be used.
