Long Shot...

Anyone's DH a car guy?  My brakes went out on my truck today at the worst possible time and I'm terrified that it's going to cost us way more than we have right now (we don't use credit cards, so that's not an option for us at all).  I would at least like to get an idea of what is wrong so we don't get hosed!

    yes - we are engineers, my DH used to work for Bosch in the brake division.

     What exactly is your question?  My email is kathymarie81 at gmail dot com and I can try to ask him, but as you know, we're really busy so it might take me a day or so to get back to you.

    Have the brakes been squeaky, slowly getting bad? Or like they just stopped working?

    My DH hates paying for any car maintanence so we rarely do.  If it is just a brake change it rally isn't very hard to do yourself.  If you have started to ruin the rotors that is a bit harder to do yourself or if it is a caliper or brake assembly.  But you can still usually get the parts without taking it to the shop.

    If it's just sqeaking, you just need to replace the break pads - which like Amanda said isn't hard to do yourself I'm told (I haven't actually done it myself, lol) .  I juts got mine quoted at the dealership just for kicks and it was outrageous, so def worth DIY if you can.

    Like Amanda also said, if you let them wear too low and you damaged the rotors, that's big bucks.

    I have had my roters turned to avoid replacing them. ?I honestly don't don't what a brake job costs. ?My cousin has always done it for me for cost and a case of beer. ?It is pretty cheap as DIY, he seemed to do it fairly easily, but I never helped.
