Why do people feel the need to have a million FB friends

I have noticed that some of my friends (actually good friends in real life) become friends with someone immediately after I do.  The thing is, I have very few friends on there that are not people that I knew very well at some point or another and yet I know that these people barely knew each other.  I just find it funny.  I know people are curious but IMHO, having too many friends on here makes it impossible to read everything and I am so over knowing that someone just went to the bathroom and is now watching TV, lol, not really but you get what I mean!  On the flip side, I think it's super cool to be able to talk to friends that you lost touch with although I have quickly learned that after one or two messages you have nothing more to say to these people.  I have only been on for less than 3 weeks!

  • In my opinion though, it's ok if you only exchange a msg or two with someone, it's worth it to know how they are and to be back in touch!  I talk with many people daily on there that I haven't talked to IRL in years, and they are as sweet and fun as I remember them 10 years ago.  I too don't love the "so-and-so is going to bed" status updates, I try to make mine at least interesting to read :)  So I definitely have more than just my close friends on Facebook, but that's what makes it interesting to me.

  • Don't  get me wrong, I have non-close friends too although most of the people I was either close with when I was a kid or I was friends/friendly with as an adult.  I just laugh that people that were not friends but went to 7th grade together are inviting either other.  But you are right, it is what makes it interesting.

  • I agree, it's no fun to invite someone you just knew OF, but weren't really friends with, I mean who cares??  I hate to just "ignore" those requests, but I definitely have brushed off a few peeps I went to high school with that I never even had a freakin conversation with...

  • For me, a lot of it is curiosity. Most people set their profiles so that only friends can see... I friend a lot of old acquaintances just to see what they are up to. We exchange a few lines and then move on. Doesn't bother me any!

Ditto. I have a lot of friends from here as well as friends from high school, college, and my old teaching job before I had kids.

me, too. I've actually "rekindled" old friendships, and I'm really good friends with someone now that I barely talked to in high school.
