3rd Trimester

anyone get flu while pregnant? possibly TMI...

I don't know if I have the flu, but it's definitely a stomach virus. It started this afternoon and I can't keep anything down.. plus coming out both ends. (sorry if TMI)

I have a list of medicines I can take. My doctors office is closed until the morning. I feel super sick and dehydrated.

Would you wait it out until the morning? I called and there isn't an answering service... and honestly I'd rather be at home than try to go to the E.R.

  • Utilize that list and continue to drink your fluids.  Probably not much the ER could do anyways, unless you're really dehydrated.  Good luck and feel better.

  • If you can't keep water down for 24 hours I would go to the ER to at least get an IV.  I can't believe your office doesn't have a after hours line.  You could always call L&D though.
  • I had something just like that around 23 weeks or so. Not fun. I hung out with the toilet ALL night. I was finally able to keep things down after 12 hours. I tried to stay as hydrated as possible and actually wouldn't have called my doc at all except that I spotted a little the next day. Doc was not worried at all and said it was from vomiting so forcefully?!?

I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this. I hope that you feel better soon. Just try to stay hydrated, that's most important. Calling the doc is up to you. Feel better!!

  • Try to wait it out.  Can you keep water down to hydrate yourself?  Do you have a fever?  I would think it just has to run it's course.  Sorry you're feeling so bad :(  Are you taking whatever you can that's on your list?

  • If you continue to vomit/diarrhea for more than a few hours, 3 or more, I would go in.  It's costly, but you're pregnant.  They can give you IV fluids to help rehydrate you if you aren't able to keep anything down.  They can also give you IV anti-emetics (anti-puke meds) to get the vomiting under control.  Then you will likely get a script for an oral anti-emetic to take at home.

  • I had stomach flu twice in a month when I was about 5 months along.  It was no fun but I was adamant that I would not take any medications so I put up with the aches and pains.  Make sure you keep drinking liquids.  The advice nurse recommended I drink a shot glass size of water every 20 minutes to stay hydrated.  She said any more would actually make me nauseous and throw up more so I had to avoid chugging down water even though I was super thirsty.
  • I would say take teeny sips of water and if you feel any contractions, at least call L&D to see what they would have you do.
  • Thanks girls!

DH is at the pharmacy right now getting some "approved" medicines. Hopefully they will work.

  • I had a stomach virus about 2 weeks ago and i started having very painful BH contrax.  Dr was concerned that i was dehydrated so called in a rx for Zofran.  I drank gatorade very slowly to re-hydrate and felt normal after about 2 days.
