3rd Trimester

Am I the only one planning a homebirth?

Is anyone else planning a homebirth?  I realized that only 1% of births are at home, but surely there are others out there.  Somebody?  Anybody?  Anybody's friend or family?

Re: Am I the only one planning a homebirth?

  • And why are you planning a home birth exactly?!

  • I was born at home - that was 26 years ago though :)  My mom loved it and thought it was an awesome birth experience, my dad to this day says it was the craziest and stupidest thing they ever did, LOL (probably an indication of why they're not married anymore, ha!).

  • Nope, I think it's dangerous. To each his own I suppose.

  • nope not me i will be having my baby at the hospital... yeah why are you planning  a home birth??
  • Homebirth scares me. I'm way to paranoid of a person for that.

  • It interests me, but I have a specific fear that isn't appropriate in this post.  If I knew that nothing would go wrong (duh, that's never going to happen in any setting though) I would totally have a HB.

  • It scares the hell out of me and the mess ewwww.
  • No offense but I'm taking the hospital route.  Even if we thought of home birthing as an option it wouldn't work, we're too far from the hospital for any ER's...sorry. I just hope you are doing it with safety in mind. I've seen some scary videos.

  • Two of my best friends had amazing homebirths, both water births. I like the idea, but I have too many medical issues to even consider it.

It's not dangerous at all if you have a trained midwife and a good back-up plan.

  • um, definately not!  To each her own!
  • Are we talking a MW assisted home birth or freebirthing??
  • Not my style. And, we are too far from a hospital that if something were to go wrong, it wouldn't be safe. I plan to use advanced medical technology for my benefit.

I have 2 friends that had complication free pregnancies that ended up in scary, emergency c-sections. What will you do if this happens to you?

I researched about the options long before I became pregnant and met with multiple practitioners OBs and midwives).  My mom gave birth at a freestanding birth center and some friends have had wonderful experiences having healthy and happy homebirths.  I am a good candidate for a home birth and live within minutes from the hospital.  I will have two certified nurse midwives who will be attending my birth who together have attended 100s of births.

I believe birth is a natural normal process and a woman should give birth where she feels safest and most confident.  For me that's at home.

My question was more in trying to find other homebirthers.

  • My dad was born at home b/c my g-ma couldn't make it to the hospital..needless to say he is not circumcised..eww TMI I know but thought it was funny!
  • there is a girl doing a homebirth who checks in the february sweethearts daily check in. her username starts with jeri. She is usually on in the mornings when i post the check in, you may want to try posting this again in the AM. GL!

lol!  I weird, not insane!  I would consider freebirthing if my husband was an obgyn!

Thank you!  I will try to find her.

  • Goodheartedmommy on Parenting had a home birth for her 3rd child.  All I need to know is that the maternal death rate in 1900, when home birth was common was 1 in 130.  Now it is 1 in 13,000.  Medical care is a big part of that reason.
  • I'm having mine at a free standing birthing center. my midwife calls it, a homebirth away from home since its not associated with a hospital and there are no dr's on staff (in the event of an emergency i will be transfered to one of 2 hospitals that are within 5 mins). I may have one some day if we lived near a hospital with a good reputation and after i get past this one. My sister had all 3 of her boys at home with a midwife and had a great experience every time. Good luck!

Lol, ok just checking! By the way, I'm moving to KS in about 2 weeks!

  • Depending on how this birth goes, I would definitely consider having my second birth at home or in a birthing center.

after watching the business of being born i understand why women would want a homebirth. I hope everything goes well for you!

  • Not pregnant anymore, but homebirth was my dream :-( We live too far from the hospital, and it would have been too dangerous. GOOD FOR YOU...and I hope you get the exact birth you want. All but maybe one of the girls in my 3rd tri natural birth check-in ended up in a c-section (including me). I think without the cascade of intervention, the SKYROCKETING number of sections could be avoided.

  • Good for you! I would sure love to HB and I really wish I'd stuck to my guns on baby #1 and done what I knew deep down was right. My biggest regret. This one will be a VBAC and if all goes according to plan, I'm still not ruling out an HBAC someday!

I will do you one better, I have a friend who did a HBAC..but it was an unassisted homebirth. CRAAAZZZYYYYYY. Good luck! I know AnKa over on Money Matters recently had a HBAC, said it was amazing (and I am SO jealous!).

    Me too!

  • DH and I considered it, but he didn't feel comfortable.  Ohio isn't a very homebirth-friendly state.

    I wish you luck though!

  • A friend of mine had a home birth 18 months ago, and it planning the same for #2, due in May. She had a really good midwife and her husband was very supportive the first time through, I'm hoping the 2nd time goes just as well.

Good luck with it, I don't think I could do it.....just don't go the free birthing route!!

  • I would love to but my DH is very against it..

I hope you like KS and good luck with your move.  We're in the KC suburbs--Lenexa.  I'm from So-cal originally and have lived here almost 5 years.

  • One weird addition...at my last midwife appointment, a mennonite couple was just before us.  I asked my midwife if she had a lot of mennonite couples and she said most of them go to the hospital.  I thought that they would have their own midwives, support, etc.  Well, I guess that the couple did have a cell phone, but they were all in their prarie-style getup, bonnet and all.  They were too cute.

I think you are confusing Mennonites with the Amish (Both are Anabaptist, the Amish broke off from the Mennonites because they go to modern). Mennonites around here even drive cars :-) Amish have their own midwives, etc. My best moment working at Walmart was selling a giant box of Magnum condoms to a Mennonite teenage girl.

  • Mrs. Frenchy and Pinksweetpea2 on 6-12 both had homebirths.  We are VERY supportive of homebirthers over there, c'mon over!

And I have mad jealousy.  If I have a #3, baby will be born at home.  Although it is illegal for CNM to attend homebirths in Massachusetts.  I'm not down for a lay MW, so I'll have to get that law changed, first!

  • Not planning on a homebirth.  The thought of having to clean my house (which I know I would feel compelled to do)  just so I could bleed all over is too much to get past.  Not to mention that I would have ended up at the hosp. with DS last time anyway.  But hey, if you are for it, I have no issues with it.  It's just not for me.
  • We aren't for two main reasons, one I want to have a medical team ready if something were to go bad and two, my hubby is a paramedic and it would stress him out if we were hbing...on the chance something went wrong b/c he would have to medically help and not just emotionally support.
  • Good luck to you! I'm sorry you're not getting more open-minded responses!
