Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Taking 14 mo to Jamaica?

Hi Ladies,

We are considering taking our little guy with us to Jamaica in the middle of February.  My Dad and my IL's would also be coming. I was hesitant about it, but my mom just passed away 3 months ago and my dad REALLY wants us to go and for all of us to get away, so we are seriously thinking about it. I have been to Jamaica before and we are looking at a very family friendly resort, but I'm wondering if any of you have taken your toddler on a trip like this before. We are from Canada, so it would be a 6 hour flight which makes me a bit nervous. We will have lots of help between the grandparents and each other, so that is good too. If any of you have done this, how did it go? Is it doable, or just too much work? How did you baby react to the food/travel, etc?

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it!

Re: Taking 14 mo to Jamaica?

  • We took DS to Beaches Negril at the begining of December (he was 15 months).  We had a great time.  We had a much shorter flight coming from DC, but he did great (slept on our laps most of the time).  He did get antsy on the ride to the resort, so we broke out the Elmo DVD, which made him happy.  The food at the resort was very Americanized, and he loved it.  He ate lots of eggs, fresh fruit, etc.  He didn't like the milk there at all, so we just made sure he ate cheese and yogurt instead.  His sleeping was a little off at night, but nothing too bad.  I'd do it again (and we are next year).

  • I haven't done something like that, but it sounds really doable with all the help you have.  Are you staying in a suite/apt or a regular hotel room?  A suite woud probably be easier but a regular hotel rom is manageable. We've stayed in hotels with her before and it's fine if a little crowded with all the baby gear etc.  I say do it.
  • My sister-in-law took her 10 month old to Tahiti last year and that was 20 hours door to door with all the layovers.  Sorry I don't have any specifics but she said it was no problem.
  • That makes me feel a lot better about it. I thought forsure people would say "No way", but we really want to go and spend some time together as a family. He is a pretty happy baby in general, but the mini dvd player is a great tip! :) I think we will go ahead and book. Thanks for the advice!
