1st Trimester

Any plus size ladies here?

I have a couple of questions.

One is, I am very nervous about my first appointment because I think my doctor is probably going to yell at me for how heavy I am.  I did recently start exercising so I am doing something about it.  Did your doctor give you a  hard time about your weight?

My next question is, where do you plan on shopping for your maternity clothes.  I know about Lane Bryant, but I don't really know where else to look and I want more options.   I don't need them yet, just wanted to start looking at what my options are so that I can save some money for when I do need them.

Thanks!

Re: Any plus size ladies here?

  • My doc didn't say anything about my weight when I went in, but every doc is different.  I got a lot of hand me down maternity clothes from my sister who is the same size I am.  She found some stuff at Motherhood Maternity.  Lane Bryant will probably be the best bet.

  • Yep I was very, very nervous about my first apt. because although I am an advid exerciser I'm still a sz 16/18 (thanks to the 40lbs I gained after my wedding!), but when I went to the dr. last week they barely mentioned it all my doc said was just try to keep the weight gain around 15-20lbs and not go crazy worring about it. She also said that in my first tri not to push myself too much w/ working out and that was it. I was soooo very relieved that nobody made a big deal out of it.

And, you read my mind w/ the next question, I went to sears and ON today for the hell of it to see what they had, and yeah...nothing fit, I'm normally a pear shape w/ a smaller waist-well it was smaller, and larger hips, legs and butt and it was bad, so I'm planing to try khols and may LB mat. I figure I may not need them for a while for now I have a bella band that works ok. Good Luck!

  • Hey, plus sized lady here. Try not to be too nervous about your first appointment. I was nervous but my doctor didn't give me a hard time. I think the most important thing is to try to be active and try not to gain as much weight  as someone who is small to begin with, but I'm sure your doctor will go over all of that. As for shopping, I've been looking at Lane Bryant, Motherhood Maternity also has some plus sized options.. good luck!

  • 1) I don't know how big you are but my doctor was more concerned about my weight when I could do something about it.. and not so much now. I'm in the 'obese' category of the bmi... but I'm only a size 18. Just be warned that you probably won't get the cute 'bump' that many skinny girls get... and will probably have a harder time to lose the baby weight.  Just try not to gain more than 15 lbs during the pregnancy. Plus, my doctor is bigger in size than me, so if she said anything derogatory to me I could always say, thanks for your excellent example.

    2) Motherhood maternity has plus-sized options. I went to Walmart and got XL maternity yoga pants for $15 and LOVE them. I also got a bellaband and know it is saving us lots of $$ on getting more clothes.

Many plus-sized women lose weight during the pregnancy and may not have to get plus-sized clothes until much later too - since baby gets so many nutrients from what you've stored for so long... and your shape changes.

  • My doctor didn't say anything about my weight. I was told that I didn't have to gain 30lbs. if I didn't want to. I got some pants at Motherhood Maternity, but I plan on shopping at Lane Bryant as well.
  • I almost posted this yesterday (seriously). I am a sz 22. I had started ww and working out eariler this month, but the last week that has gone to crap . My first appt is next Friday and I am very nervous, more so about the complications that can come up. As far as maternity clothes, bella band makes a size that will fit me. Lane Bryant, and Motherhood. JC Penny & Sears have them also. I am going to try to start walking again and doing my wii fit (yoga, balance, and areobics). Good Luck!

  • Thanks ladies.  I am definitely in the obese category.  I have been hearing people talk about bella bands for a while, where do you get these?  I already have a lot of flowy tops since that is somewhat the style so those should work for a while.  I am more worried about pants.

I am also nervous about the whole gestational diabetes since I am already big I know it is a risk.

Thanks for all of your advice though.  I really appreciate it!

That is the website, but I don't think you can order it there. They do have links to their retailer. I'm probably getting mine at amazon.com

  • Thanks for posting ladies.  I'm so glad to know that I'm not alone!!  I'm a size 16/18 and my doctor has never been upset about my weight.  I haven't called him yet about this pg (I'm waiting to make sure it sticks this time!!) but I hope he has some advice on how much to gain (not to gain) during the pg.  I'm worried about that bc my Mom said she gained over 80lbs when she was pg with me... yikes!!

  • I am butting in from 2nd tri but I have and had the same concerns. I actually lost about 8lbs during 1st tri and haven't gotten it back. My dr. actually mildly scolded me for losing and not getting it back but for me nothing sounded good and I really didn't feel like eating. I am a size 18 and have found clothes online at ON and in the store at Target and Ross and Burlington. Last week I saw bella bands at Target. Don't stress about it. I am short and compact but def. not little and my bump is coming in nicely.

  • It sounds like there are a handful of us on here.  I don't have my appointment until next Tuesday and it's with a doctor I've never seen before.  I don't know how that's going to go as far as my weight is concerned.  Right before I got pregnant, I lost 30 lbs and my regular doctor was so happy with me and we were going to keep going strong.  Then I got pregnant.  I haven't gained any back so far and I'm trying to keep it that way.  But I guess we'll see if I get yelled at.  Lol.

As for clothes, I liked the things they had at JCPenny's and Target.  Lane Bryant makes cute things too.

  • I'm a size 14/16 and my doctor didn't say a word to me about my weight. I got pregnant last Jan. and I weighed 40 lbs. more than I do now, and even then she didn't say anything about weight. With that pregnancy, she told me I could lose weight in the beginning to make up for the weight I would gain. She told me if I didn't gain any weight at all, I would be fine, or I could gain up to 15 lbs. Unfortunately I had undiagnosed hypothyroidism and PCOS so that pregnancy ended in an early m/c.

But this time, I was told that I'm now considered a normal pregnancy and I should gain 15 lbs. with this pregnancy. She has been nothing but wonderful and never makes negative comments or yells at me about weight. They were very excited that I lost 40 lbs. and even allowed me to use Clomid and a trigger shot to try to get pregnant. Granted, we got pregnant on the unmedicated cycle. But don't be concerned about your weight. At this point, you can't do anything about it so they should be concerned about your baby!

  • My doc said nothing about my weight and nothing about how much I should gain.  She just said to take my prenatal and eat a balanced diet.

I have been buying maternity pants at Target.  My local Target had a terrible selection of maternity clothes but Target.com is great.  Most of their clothes go up to XXL (I wear a sz 20 and they fit me fine)  Being pregnant during the summer in the South, I've looked more at the summery clothes and I'm just trying to fit together clothes to make it through the last of the cold weather.  Target has gaucho pants on clearance right now in several colors and the are $6.49 to $9.99. (I ordered one in every color)  Old Navy's website has a lot of maternity clothes if your local Old Navy doesn't have a selection.

I bought a pair of khakis the other day that I love.  They are not maternity, but they are perfect for 1st tri bad bloat days when nothing else seems to fit.  They are Lee Comfort Waist and have an elastic waist but you can't see it (it's more of really stretchy cotton and spandex.)  They had jeans, khakis, and that khaki-green color.  I got them at my area Goody's.

  • I'm a size 16 generally (an occassional 14), and my doc wanted me to keep my weight gain for the entire pregnancy to only 10 pounds!    And this is the Perinatologist - my high risk OB specialist.

  • I typical wear an 18/20 on bottom, but I'm smaller on top. My midwife said nothing to me other than to try not to gain more than 20-25 lbs. There's no need in putting undue stress on you. I lost some weight during my first tri due to awful morning sickness. I'm just now getting to where I'm almost back to my normal weight.

  • I wear a 20 or 22, and I totally feel you.  I discussed the weight loss plan I had been on prior to getting pregnant with my OB, and she told me that I didn't have to gain any weight while I was pregnant so long as the baby continued to develop normally.  So far my weight has fluctuated up and down, but all told I'm holding steady.  I'm concerned about finding maternity pants that fit for work, since I normally wear talls.  Anyone have any luck finding plus size TALL maternity pants? Good luck ladies, here's to cute baby bumps all around.

PS, I'm totally terrified I'll not have a cute bump, I'll just look really fat.  That would suck.

  • I'm with all you ladies!

I've got PCOS, so my doctor doesn't really seem too concerned for my weight so far. ?I even asked him before I got PG how much I should get down to, and he told me this: I've delivered ladies 100 lbs. more than you, so I think you'll be fine.

And I've lost 5 lbs. this trimester already, and my doc has told me that I might lose up to 15 lbs. while pregnant, or maybe gain up to 10 lbs. ?So, I'm not worried too much.

And lovelyophelia: look at the small selection at AAFES. ?Mom got me some pants there!?

  • If your doctor yells at you, walk out. A doctor who has a lack of respect for you now, will not be a person who will be willing to help you in the future. I know that being overweight is not ideal, and a good doctor will let you know your risks, but you should not be scolded or treated disrespectfully because of your size. My doctor has been wonderful about my weight. She informed me of the risks, and has been amazing through my struggles while we were TTC.

As for maternity clothes, try JCP online, Old Navy, and Motherhood Plus.

    Good Luck!
