Pregnant after 35

amnio??

i am turning 38 next week. I am currently 17 weeks pregnant adn scheduled to have an amnio on thursday. My doctor suggested it because of my age. I had the triple screen blood test and the results were 1:770, same risk as a 29 year old.  I would like to know that everything is ok but am scared to have the amnio.... my doctor doesn't perform live u/s during the amnio b/c of fear of infection into the uterus.  I do have fibroids and worry that may pose a problem. This is my second baby.  (1st was born April 2007 and no amnio - different ob who is now retired :( ) He was very small at full term (4lb 12) and the doctor never decisively said if it was due to fibroids or poor placenta.... so to finally close i'm looking for other people's opinions and experience.... as far as if i would terminate (in case someone asks that question) I honestly don't know what i would do. OH and where i live we don't have the NT u/s

thanks

Re: amnio??

  • I would probably not have it, if my results where 1 in 770 at 39, those are very good odds!

I agree with you, even after having 1 in 3 odds, I still don't know what I would do.  Most people here (85 to 95%) terminate, but I don't think anyone can really say until they are in those shoes.

  • i'm confused- the doc does not do an US while doing the amnio? what would an US have to do with infection?   I would not have an amnio done that did not involve an US - how will the doc know where to insert???

we opted out of the amnio - b/c we would not terminate and felt no reason to risk m/c just to find out if something was/was not wrong.  My NTS risk odds were that of a 20 y/o.

  • The Dr doesn't do a live u/s... they find a clear spot, remove the u/s (after m the marking it) and insert the needle.  no u/s is used durign the amnio.
  • Your triple screen results are very good. Plenty of us over here have perfectly healthy babies at 38 and 40. I was nervous early in my pregnancy and then later on I failed my non-stress tests. I worried about having a giant baby due to my GD. DS was 6 lbs. 8 oz.

So I would not do an amnio.?

  • I don't mean to harp on it, but I still don't understand WHY ultrasound isn't done during the amnio.  Did they give you a reason?

    That baby can wiggle!

  • I gave birth to DD when I was 38 and my OB never suggested an amnio; I dont recall what my numbers were but if yours are comparable to a 29yr olds I personally wouldn't do it.  We did have the NT u/s tho.

I do have a friend whose numbers came back hi risk;  she had the amnio w/no problem and found out the baby was completely healthy.  She was 37.

  • I will be 38 next month and had my NT scan today. My risk is 1:148 for Down's and the dr recommended an amnio. Even with my risk, I am hesitant to do it because of the m/c risks of the amnio.

If I had your risk, I personally wouldn't do the amnio - it would not be worth it for me.

  • I'm 40, and I had really good numbers from my tests, but we ultimately decided to do an amnio because there was one soft marker.  The doctor did it with an u/s.  If you get an experienced doctor, the odds of mc drop a lot.  Like a pp said, I can't imagine doing an amnio without an u/s.  My guy was wiggling all over the place, and a couple of times the u/s tech had to tell the doctor to pause to wait for the baby to move a limb.
  • I'm having a tough time with the u/s part.  I'd talk to them further and get some clarification on that--honestly, it just doesn't sound right.  I had an amnio two weeks ago and, while not the most pleasant experience I've ever had, it was fine and really nothing to be scared of.  GL!!
  • It is a personal decision and not an easy one to make.  I did have amnios with both pregnancies, but I struggled with my decision the first time around.  I did my research on my doctor and he had a very low complication rate.  With my second amnio, I did have good results on the NT scan, but wanted a diagnostic test to rule out all of the other chromosoal abnormalities as well.  I did not have it done for termination purposes, rather for information.  I wanted to be prepared for whatever the test told us.  Luckily, everything was fine.

Best of luck to you on your decision and the results.

EDIT: Sorry-I am operating on no sleep.  The no u/s part worries me.  Is there another doctor who can do the amnio?

  • I would not have the amnio with those numbers. Your odds are really, really good, so why risk m/c with the amnio? I wouldn't. Good luck with your decision, it's tough.
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • I had the amnio and its really not as bad as you think as far as pain goes. The risk of MC is only 1 in 400 and the results are the most accurate used today.

If your really that scared though, do what ever makes you feel comforatble.

    Good luck!

  • So i had the amnio this morning.  Things seemed to go well - so far so good.  The u/s technician found the pocket of fluid and marked it. the dr inserted the needle. she then asked the tech to put the u/s back on to make sure everythign was ok before she started drawing fluid.  the baby was kicking and to me looked very close to needle. (this was def the scariest part)  finally the baby moved away, the tech removed the u/s wand and the dr proceeded to draw the fluid.  So now i wait and hopefully everything is ok.  i appreciate all the advice.  thanks!
