? About Tongue Tie Clipping

DS has, in my opinion, has a fairly severe tongue tie. Since it is not medically necessary to clip it, our pedi's office would not refer us to an ENT. In December DS and I were in a store and he began to sob :( When I looked in his mouth he was bleeding from his frenulum. Needless to say, because of that incident we got the referral. In any event, we need to schedule a consult and get it clipped. My question is how do they do it and what is recovery like? I want to do it sooner than later because I feel like the younger he is the better. I am worried because now he is more active than a few months ago. TIA :)
It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

Re: ? About Tongue Tie Clipping

  • I actually had mine clipped when I was 12.  It's still the only stitches I've ever had.

From that point of view:  It took about a week to talk coherently, etc.  However, I had it done on like a thurs and was back in school by monday.  It didn't really hurt to much, more so it was annoying, and I couldn't eat what I wanted to.  I believe the stitches were dissolving by two weeks.

I would think, as baby who is not talking and moving around so much, everything would be less.  less pain, less recovery, etc.

Mine was also probably not quite as severe as your DS, since it wasn't done when I was little.

  • some docs make it more complicated than others - it depends on the doc. in our case - the ent did it right in the office - with just a little lidocaine - one snip - and that was it.  one drop of of blood - and then it healed very quickly.  we were not in the room - but it took 30 seconds and that was that. it didnt help with nursing in our case  but i'm glad we did it to avoid possible speech problems down the road.  jack's was pretty significant too.

  • for babies - it's not really vascular or  as fleshy as it would be once  they get older so it's very simple.  good luck!!

  • Madeline's was pretty significant. We had it snipped when she was 2 weeks. I was told that there were not a lot of nerves in the frenulum so the procedure would not be very painful. We were in the room when she has it done. She cried for a few minutes than nursed right away and stopped crying once she lactched on. There was minimal blood and it stopped even beofre we left the doctor's office. I think it was probably worse on me than it was on her.

  • Gabriella had is when she was born.  Our pedi sent an ENT to the nursery and our hospital room to do it while I was recovering from my c-section. It was very simple and there was no recovery period at all.

I would not wait. The early the better.

  • DD had hers at 5 months, we only knew b/c she was not breastfeeding properly, so we found out in the hostipal, Ped said it was no big deal wit wait it out, I took her to a speech therapist and she highly ecommend it.  I friend of mine Dh is a oral surgeon and I took DD there and he clipped it right in the ofice at 5months, he said that he clips alot and it will affect speech later in life, if we would have waitd until she was over a year and talking he would have had to put her to sleep to do it.  It took one snip and he was don, she cried for 5 montiues, bled alittle and that was it.  GL with what you decide.
