How to surprise the grandparents

I plan to let our parents know about the pregnancy at around 12 weeks..about a month from now. DH's parents will likely be snowbirding to Florida Feb-March so we'll likely share the news with them via phone, email or post mail.  My parents are the ones I really want to surprise because they only have one grandchild who is 10 years old and lives out of state.  With me living in the same area as my parents, I know they'll spend a lot of time with my baby so I really want to do something cool to surprise them.  Anyone have any ideas?  I don't want to get my mom a memory book because that'll just go in a closet and not get done.

  • I've been thinking about the same thing and have decided how we're going to do it.  Whenever our family gets together I like to initiate a "go-round"  which goes like this, I'll ask a question or give an instruction, could be anything from, What did you eat for lunch, to, Say something nice about the person to your right, and we all respond.

At our next get together, I'm going to ask, Did you make a new year's resolution, and if so what is it?  When it comes to my turn my answer will be "I resolve to gain 25-35 pounds by September."  Should be interesting to see who in the family actually gets it.

Whatever you decide to do I'm sure they'll be thrilled!

  • With my DS I got them an I Love Grandma & I Love Grandpa frames with the sonogram pic in it and we gave them a card that said "You're going to be Grandparents"
  • I took a picture of the positive pregnancy test and put in the middle of a bunch of pictures my mom had asked me to order for her from my sister's graduation, christmas, etc.

When my mom got to the picture she looked at me and goes "what is that?" I said "mom its a pregnancy test" and she goes "oh, you thought you were pregnant?"... haha I waited a second and said "mom, I AM pregnant" - she just started hugging me and pacing around the kitchen, very excited.

My dad was even funnier, when he got to the picture he held it up and was like "this isn't from sam's graduation" and went to discard it and then took a closer look at it and went "oh my god you're pregnant". He jumped up too and the two of them spent the night trying to figure out what they want to be called as grandparents :).

  • When we told both sets of parents it was around Christmas time.  I ordered two Christmas bulbs from Bronner's (A huge Christmas store in Frankenmuth, MI) that said "When a Child is Born, So is a Grandparent."   I wrapped them up and we gave them to our parents when we exchanged Christmas presents.  DH's mother had to look at it for a minute before she got the idea.  My dad got it right away.  Both times, lots of rejoicing and excitement.
