Success after IF

talk to me about shots please...hormone ones

so i have to take my first shot next week, follistim and then my trigger shot, ovidrel.  did you give yourself the shot or did dh give it to you?  im usually ok with needles, but inflicting pain on myself i cant do.  so did it hurt?

yikes!  i dont know how you ladies did this!  i didnt need them the first time, so this is all new to me.  thanks.

  • They don't feel awesome, but they don't really hurt.  Some of them burn a little.  For me, it was more emotionally hard to have to do that and feeling a little sorry for myself.  I honestly never got that good at it.  I always chickened out and never got the needle in swiftly.  I'd end up with it just pressed against my stomach and have to keep pressing until it went it.  It's way harder that way than it needs to be.  If you can, just do it.

I did everything on my own except for PIO and delestrogen which were IM shots that DH did.

Good luck.  Just remember, you can definitely do this.  So many people have.  It will be fine, if a little nerve-wracking at first.  And I hope you get your BFP right away so you don't need to deal with a million shots.

  • I did them myself and didn't think they were bad at ALL!  The first one was a little scary.. but I did it alone in the bathroom and it was no big deal.  In fact the night I had to do my very first shot I was having a HUGE party at my house that had been scheduled for months.  I didn't have time to panic...I just had to do it and get back to the party!  I would just count 1-2-3 and stick it in.  I had to do them in my stomach and would just pinch the skin really hard and pretend I was throwing a dart.  It will be OK!!

  • Echoing the pp's. For me, it was that first shot that was hard. Once I did that, the rest were no problem. The Follistim shots were the easiest out of all the shots I did and I did everything myself, except the IM triggers that went in the butt. My dh is needle-phobic, but there's no way I would have wanted someone else injecting me anyway. I needed that sense of control!
After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • coming from someone who had close to 400 needles with 4 IVFs (yes, 400!) follistim shots are pretty benign. the needle is so tiny you can hardly feel it -- no big deal. it's not fun but it's pretty painless. just pinch and poke.

  • I agree that the 1st one is the hardest but after that they get easier. I always had my DH do mine but I did have to do a couple of progesterone shots on my own. You will be good.

  • I had my DH do it simply because it was easier for me to pinch skin and have him inject.  The follistim wasn't bad at all.  The ovidrel was a bit more painful, but that's because DH had a hard time penetrating my skin.  But I would say they weren't that bad at all.
  • the follistim and lupron were no big deal.  I did them myself in my stomach and for the most part didn't really feel them.  DH did my trigger.  Again, more psychological than anything.
  • They don't hurt. ?It is very scary the first time around. ?But it is really nothing when you are doing the little subq shots. ?You'll be o.k

?I hated needles before and technically still do but somehow managed to do them myself. ?My husband only does the IM shots for me.

    ?

    Good luck.?

  • I'm lurking from over at T-TTC.

My siggestion is to have your H do the first one so you can get an idea of how it will feel - which is close to nothing. It was a lot easier for me doing my own shots after I knew it wouldn't hurt. Good luck - the first one is the hardest!

  • WAY better for me to do it myself than for my husband to do it. Follistim is easy, it is a pen and a tiny little needed. You will barely feel it!

    Good luck!
