Re: any way to stop ovulating?

  • I hear extreme weight loss will do the trick.

I don't know of any way :  Sorry.

  • i don't have any weight to loose Crying its taken me 28 years to get to 107lbs!!! (pre preg i was 96lbs, no joke) evidently the size/weight thing is genetic, my whole family is skinny...

  • I read that, and the first thing that came to mind was

"get pregnant."  But I'm assuming that isn't the method

you want.  Other than that, anorexia and other eating

disorders, extreme stress, serious obesity (usually

morbid), and some forms of cancer can stop ovulation,

but nothing good in that list either.

Can you do a copper IUD?  Not hormonal, but it's

    supposed to work well.

  • I just wanted to say I'm jealous ... I've never ovulated on my own in my life. No

Maybe we can swap an ovary? LOL

  • hysterectomy.

  • do you want ovulation to stop for bcp reasons or do you have period issues?  just curious - i would think if your dh has a vasectomy you'd be good in the bc department!  are you planning on more children?

  • well... they won't do the hysterectomy, def nothin' wrong with the uterus just the one ovary... and unfortunately that doesn't stop ovulation, just pregnancy... but an ovum-ectomy they won't do either, some babble about how if there is a non-surgical answer they must and will always explore that first... bla bla bla bla...

and the copper IUD doesn't prevent ovulation either, only implantation... the mirena does... but still hormonal... and not covered by insurance...

basically i ovulate 4-5 times a month... which in turn makes me get AF every 2 weeks (with ovulation between somehow). and because of this frequent ovulation i get some seriously painful and large cysts. (1-3cm is the smallest they've detected)

the only thing they can do is hormonal BC because it reduces my ovulation from 4-5 to 2-3 and prevents the cysts (i got pregnant on the pill, the ring, the patch, etc.) but they won't prescribe the BC till DH's vasectomy is done and his sperm count is 0, they don't want to get sued for gross negligence for me getting pregnant and having a 3rd miscarriage due to the BC (not that it was the cause for my 2nd confirmed m/c since i wasn't on anything)

but yea, no more kids for us... to many problems staying pregnant... and too many health problems for me to get/stay/maintain a pregnancy.

  • That stinks.  I'm really sorry that your options seem to

be so limited and it's causing you so much pain :(

  • It does sound like you are pretty limited.  Have you thought of seeing a naturopath/acupuncturist/traditional chinese medicine practitioner?  They often focus on getting your whole body in tune and might have herbs and other advice to help stop ovulation as much.
  • Have you heard of Endometrial Ablation, or something like that.  What I understand is that they use hot water to burn, I guess, the inner walls of the uterus.

I knew a lady who had like 5 kids because she got pregnant on all methods of BC and even after having her tubes tied and finally had this done.

  • Here's a nice link about it.

  • Boiling water in the uterus?  Indifferent
  • I don't think it's a first choice, but it is non-hormonal and there is no removal of body parts.

    Still, ow.

  • its not a conception stance, its to prevent ovulation, scaring or preventing eggs from entering/remaining the uterus will not stop my problem... its the OVARY i need to get rid of... i have normal periods, they are just every 2 weeks because of the ovulation... i don't mind them actually (very light and little to no cramping). its the constant re-occurring ovarian cysts that is killing me. treating the "bleeding" or menses would only treat a symptom not the problem...

    but wow! that is insane...

i'm going to look into the herbalist/acupuncture and see what they say...

thanks for all the help ladies, great suggestions... if you think of anything else, keep me updated!

I would think these two factors individually (let alone combined) would equate to a medically necessary ovarian resection.  Have you tried getting a second opinion?

  • to be honest i hadn't really thought about a 2nd opinion... but it might be a good idea... i'm waiting till Friday (or early next week) for my blood test results to come back... "normal" i'm sure...

unfortunately neither my OB/Gyn or my General feel that a future pregnancy would harm me or result in another m/c so to them its JUST a reoccuring (resolving) cyst issue. My OB even told me that its normal and as long as they go away every month there was nothing they would/could do about it. So that's why i headed straight to my General... she's amazing and has helped me out so much over the years, i kind of just took what she told me as the end of it... but yea... maybe getting another opinion would be benifitial. would this be an OB/Gyn call or see some sort of specialist? (i don't need a referral for anyone w/ my current insurance).

  • I would RUN to another dr. if anything just for piece of mind.  Possibly an RE who would be trained to evaluate your hormonal system in depth.

I have the complete opposite problem (amenorrhea (no periods) and no ovulation) and was basically told my my Gyn (who I had previously really liked) that since my blood work was mostly all w/in the normal range there was nothing they could do for me and to come back when I wanted a baby so they could send me to an RE.  Blah, I want to feel like I'm doing something to help.  And guess what?  4 months with my ND I ovulated on my own... really late, but hey it's something.  I changed my diet, took herbs/supplements, and have acupuncture ~10 days.

I'm sure my Gyn is a great dr, BUT the big problem is her inability to want to treat the whole person.  She is so centered on treating a problem.  In her mind no periods is not a huge problem w/out other risk factors.  Every 60-90 days she gave me hormones to kick start a "period" (really just withdrawal bleeding since there was no O) and then if/when my needs change and I want to get PG she would treat that problem with fertility meds (a great thing, but also not always effective).

Do you temp to determine when you do O?

  • I know that pain can indicate medical necessity.  Since they would want to go "conservative" with hormone treatment first, just tell them that you are unwilling to risk the side effects of hormone therapy (stroke, etc), and want the ovectomy.  Do you know if it is both ovaries, or just one that is causing the problem.  If at all possible, I would want to keep one ovary to help your body regulate your female hormones.
  • its just the one ovary... and i used temping for a while (pre DD) to verify ovulation, then the OPK's (CBEFM) using them for 2 full cycles while TTC (before my 2nd m/c) then the 2 cycles leading up to my full term pregnancy.

i'm so small that i don't need any of those things to tell me when i'm ovulating, i can feel it, but i did use them to show to my OB/Gyn and my General when we were having problems staying pregnant, i can literally feel my cyst by pressing on my tummy (while laying on my back) right now.

the only hormone therapy they want to do is BC. since as far as we know all my other levels are withing acceptable limits and ranges, there isn't much they will do. I did have my OB tell me that i was not a candidate for having a singular ovectomy due to the fact that my cysts resolve every "cycle". if they were persistant or lasted into the next cycle then it would be considered.

and its just the left ovary... i have a weird left kidney as well... tons of stones just sitting in that one, and nothing in the other! my right ovary is pretty much dormant.

i'm all for a second opinion... like i asked before: is this something i should ask a new ob/gyn or some sort of specialist? i know someone mentioned an endo, but it doesn't seem to be hormonally linked (that they can find anyway)
