I will try to remember as many details as possible but I have forgot/blocked out a lot!
I went to the doctor for an appointment on Wednesday Nov. 26th (I was already overdue by 3 days). My MF had be admitted to the hospital to be induced because I had high bp (it wasn't pre-e though). We went right in and they put a Cervidil in me to soften my cervix. It lasts for 12 hours and it may or may not work, they told me. After the first 12 hours, it did nothing and they put another one in. After another 12 hours, THAT did nothing!
My MW decided to put a catheter into my cervix that had a baloon on the end of it and they blow it up to 4 cm along with another cervidil. Once that falls out, you are 4 cm dilated. This was Thursday night (Thanksgiving!) The process to insert this baloon was agonizing. I had to squeeze DH's hand and grit my teeth, it took her about 20 mins to get the thing in!! My MP came out after this. After she did this, it had irritated my cervix so bad that I started having horrible contractions. I threw up a few times. This lasted a few hours and then they gave me some Morphine so that I could sleep which I did for about 5 hours I think. When I woke up the contractions were gone!!! A nurse came in to check the catheter and when she tugged on it, it fell out which meant that I was 4cm finally! They said they would give it a few hours to see if this would put me into active labor and if not I would have to have the dreaded Pitocin! I had contractions every few minutes but they were pretty mild. Then I noticed a trickle of fluid and they werent sure if it was my water or not, but we were pretty sure it was.
We went another few hours and the contractions just weren't coming strong enough so I had to get the Pitocin! I got the Pitocin around noon and was in hard labor for about 4 hours until I couldn't take it anymore. I was only 5cm and the had told me earlier I could have something to take the edge off (I think it was Stadol-sp?) I asked for this and had to wait over an hour before my MW came in!! (I later found out that she was at the nurses station the whole time and they just told me she was on her way in because it was too early for me to get this). When she came in she asked if I wanted an epidural instead because if I got the Stadol I might not be able to get the epidural for a couple more hours and since I was in hard labor and still at 5cm I said I wanted the epidural! there was also more throwing up during this part of my labor!
The anesthegiologist came in and tried to place the epidural and it took over 30 mins for him to get it in. My contractions were coming every 2-3 mins so I had to sit still thru them all, this was HORRIBLE!! But once he got it placed I was in heaven!! This was around 4:30 and I started to push a little before 10 that night.
The pushing wasn't bad at all in the beginning. I still felt the effects of the epidural so I wasn't in too much pain. Well, I ended up pushing for 3 HOURS so the epi started to wear off!
At 12:42am on Saturday Nov 29th Sasha Elizabeth was born, weighing 9 pounds and 2 ounces! I ended up with a 3rd degree tear and had to be stitched up.
About an hour after she was born, they took her to the nursery and DH started to pack up the room so they could move me to the mother-baby unit. They told me to get into the wheelchair and when I started to get up I realized I was about the pass out. Everything started to go black and my ears were ringing. This part DH had to tell me exactly what happened because I was out of it. He said they pushed on my stomach and a huge blood clot came out followed by tons of blood. I lost twice the amount of blood you would normally lose. They had me sniff some ammonia (I think that's what it was) to keep me awake. Then they put tons of IV fluids in me to make up for the blood I was losing and the temp. of the fluid was around 70 degrees. This made me shake like CRAZY I was freezing cold. I had no idea what was going on and I was terrified. They put warm blankets on me and gave me more pitocin so my uterus would contract and clot the blood like it was supposed to. They gave me some more pills which I honestly don't remember what they were and I immediately threw them up. I then got horrible diarrhea (sorry TMI) from the drugs they were giving me and I had NO control over it, so essentially I pooped my pants all night long and my poor nurse had to deal with it all. All night I was stuck with IV's in me, the blood pressure cuff on me, a thing on my finger to monitor my pulse and a catheter. I was so uncomfortable and I had to sleep in Labor and Delivery.
DH was able to bring the baby to me so I could nurse and bond with her which was great. The great thing is that she was perfectly healthy and that's all that mattered to me! The next day they moved me to the mother-baby unit and it took me a long time before I could walk around. I was so out of breath and dizzy from all of the blood I lost.
So that is the end of my birth story, I ended up being in the hospital from Wednesday to Sunday!
