Need DD to take bottle before return to work

I need any advice I can get to get my DD to take a bottle.  She BF's great.  We started trying the bottle around 3 weeks.  For a week, she screamed each time we tried.  Then she took one bottle a day for a week with no problem.  Last Thursday she stopped taking them, hasn't taken one since and screams each time we try.  I go back to work in March, and am worried I won't be able to get her to take it.

We have tried 3 different bottles, with Dr. Browns working the first time, but nothing working this time around.

Re: Need DD to take bottle before return to work

  • My son fought the bottle until I wanted him to give it up!  But we had the most success with the Playtex Drop-In bottles.  I would just try to give your daughter a bottle as often as possible until you go back to work.  Have other people try the bottle when you're not there too - some people say that works well.  But if you have a child like mine, all you need is patience.  As I said, he resisted the bottle so much that I had to cut my hours at work so that I could be there to nurse him more frequently. However, he is 20 months old now and won't give up the bottle.  God bless these children - they do things their way!

  • I know you are worried but try not to.  I was a mess.  DD would not take a bottle.  I tried all kinds.  After working with her she would take maybe an oz. from an Adiri bottle.  I was a wreck.  The kid was going to starve.  The first day at daycare, she drank a couple of oz.  (she started on a Tues.) the next day about the same.  By Fri, they decided to warm the formula and feed her outside in the sun cuddled against them.  She only wanted to BF cuddling against me.  It worked.  She either got hungry or decided it was ok.

It will work out.  She was a crying mess.  Keep introducing the bottle.  Stick with one if possible.  Try others feeding her.

  • OK - first of all try to relax (easier said than done).  Billy would not take the bottle when I went back to work.  His first 2 days at daycare he drank 4 ozs the entire day - over 10 hours (I was so afraid I was going to have to quit my job because he was either going to starve to death or daycare was going to say he was too difficult).  I tried every bottle and position that last week at home.  But you know what by the end of his first week of daycare he figured out that if he wanted to eat at school, he had to take the bottle and we never had any issues again.  So just relax, enjoy your time at home and let him figure it out once he gets to daycare is my advice.  Hugs - I know how stressful it can be!

  • We had the same problem and I was a wreck about it on top of heading back to work

first, make sure you are not the one trying and that you are away from the situation, there is just too much with you and your boobs.

Next, baby won't starve, and will take eventually. But eventually may take longer than a couple days.

Snuggle lots and feed lots when you do get the chance. Baby make wake up a lot more at night to eat to make up for you being gone during the day. Yes, sleep deprivation on top of going back to work sucks.

Try different bottles, different temps and times of day when baby isn't "starving'

good luck, this too shall pass.

  • We had a hard time with DS as well and he ended up taking playtex drop ins the best.  I think it's that he likes the latex nipple better than the silicone.  It's just going to take some patience.  There is a great book I read called "Working Mother Nursing Mother".  It was a really good book and helped me immensely.  GL.

  • We had a hard time at first.  The ped. recommended my husband giving the one bottle at the same time everyday.  He told me to leave the house, and don't wait until  she was very hungry.  After about a week she did fine with the bottle.  I started a few weeks before I went back to work and gave her one bottle a day every single day.  Good luck!
  • Our Pediatician also told us not to keep swithing the bottles.  Stick with one for a week or two.  It is probably not the bottle type that is the problem.  We use Dr Browns and have used them from day one.
  • With DD, we tried the bottle around 4-5 weeks.  She didn't like it to say the least.  Around 8 weeks I was in my cousin's wedding and went to her bachlorette party and left DD with my mom thinking I'd have to leave after 2 hours. DD took 3 bottles from my mom, expressed BM and then formula. For the next 6 weeks we tried over and over, DH giving her a bottle, different bottles, different nipples (preemie nipple, regular), different places in the house. She screamed and put her hands over her mouth.  I told the DCP before she went.  They acted like it was no big deal.  She fussed the first day (she only goes 3 days a week) and by the end of the week she was fine.  She's even taken bottles from me on the rare occassion.  Try not to worry, and if your DCP has any experience, she'll be fine.  If not the bottle, there are other alternatives!  GL!
  • Ditto things everyone else has said.  I would stick to one type of bottle for a week though.  Switching bottles seemed to frustrate DD even more.  Also, her milk had to be really warm (almost too warm) before she would take it.
