Salicylic acid face wash bad for baby?

My mom says I should stop washing my face with it. I saw another post where someone's doctor told her it was okay. Others say it's a big no-no. I had no idea. I guess I will stop using it. I feel like my face looks horrible! It's so hard to get used to the fact that everything I put on my body and face can affect the baby. Did everyone stop using acne face washes? When does the glowing face happen?

  • you should not use it.  Its rated a C drug which means it was tested on animals and proven to be harmful.

  • As long as you are washing your face with it and not using it instead of milk in cereal you should be ok.
  • I saw that post below also....but in my doctor's pamphlet it says NOT to use it - so I stopped.  Need to find a good supplement.
  • How could I have missed this one!?! I've been so careful to not eat any of the bad foods or take any medicines. I feel so stupid.
  • I miss all my salicylic acid products buy my doctor said it was a no, for the entire pregnancy.  Something about it being converted to Vitamin A... which as you may know is like retin-A etc.  To each his own, but I'm not chancing it.

  • Is that a cream or a pill?
  • You can use Benzaclin (Benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin).  It's a paste/cream for spot treatment, prescription only.

Thanks.  I was just really bored one day and was searching pregnancy related avatars.  Don't remember where exactly.

  • When I asked my doctor she said it was fine.  I try to just use it once a day and use another facewash in the morning.

  • there's also some natural alternatives like tea tree oil which you can find in Burt's Bee Blemish Stick and if you are around a Trader Joe's Market they carry one as well. I've been using the Belli Acne wash and haven't had many breakouts, (with the exception of when I'm being too lazy and take a long nap with my makeup on) but it is pricey.

  • I quit using it and asked at my first OB appt yesterday.  They said it was FINE to use.  It is face wash, you are rinsing it off.

Interestingly, this is what my OB told me to quit using!

Unless its on your doctors list of no-no's, its probably fine.  Most don't want you to take the salicylic acid by mouth...it does come in pill form.  For the purpose of washing your face, it is most likely ok.

I have been using a lotion almost nightly that contains the Salicylic acid.  Its the only thing that keeps my baby acne under some control.  My doc never said no and the only mention of the drug is that it shouldn't be taken by mouth.  So don't swallow your face wash, and you should be ok.

If you are really worried about it, then stop using it and just use a gentle cleanser....your skin may change several times throughout your pregnancy anyways.

Benzaclin is a category C medication, but Clindamycin is ok and Benzoyl perioxide is ok so why someone would says its bad I dont know.  Every doctor has their list of do's and don't which confuses us all.  As long as you're not using Retin A, Accutane or Tetracycline you're probably fine.

  • My OB also said this is okay. She just got done having her 3rd child last  summer and used it in her pregnancy.

  • i specifically asked my ob about my facewash with sylic (sp?)  acid and she said no way--she doesn't recommend that any of her patients use it---didn't go into detail but the look on her face was a definite "no-no" so i don't use it anymore----

don't feel stupid cause i didn't know either until reading it online and i stopped using it then asked a few weeks later at my doc appt---they never told me nor handed me a sheet with do's and don'ts (so i feel in the dark a lot of times)!

  • My doctor said most over the counter face washes were fine. He said topical is ok but he wanted me to to have him write all prescriptions.  He said absolutely no to Retin-A.
  • This goes for any medication question....  The easiest thing a practitioner can do is to tell a woman to avoid a drug.  It absloves them of responsibility.  A much harder thing to do is for a practitioner to give a patient choices which are most likey safe  Also, drugs are not tested on pregnant women for the most part.  Consequently, this is why many drugs are in the higher categories.
