I have a friend who refers to her SIL's as her sisters and it always throws me when she discusses her "sisters" because she doesn't have any. Then like 10 minutes into the conversation I realize she means her SILs. Discuss.
when talking to other people, I will say my SIL. If talking to my SIL directly or within family, I will say my sister. We are really really close and thats what we consider each other.
For SIL, no, but for cousins' spouses, I do drop the "in law" and just say "my cousin," so I could see how someone would do this for SIL if she doesn't have any sisters of her own.
nope, I only have one SIL and I don't call her my sister. I have 2 real sisters and that name is reserved for them. My SIL on the other hand does call her SIL's sisters and it throws me all off because she has 1 real sister and 2 SIL's so unless she says names I never know who she is speaking about.

Same for my SIL and me - we were friends long before DH and I started dating (he's her twin) and we're closer than I am with my biological sister. She's the best, really.
i used to. ?i am soooooo close to my brother and i used to refer to her as my sister to feel closer to her, to be cool w/ her. ?but she is not so into it or my family ?=( ?
i think it might be cultural. ?we are filipino and she is caucasian...??? ?in our culture you call all elders auntie or uncle even if they aren't. ?its a respect thing...

Not at all, she's not my sister. Just like I don't call my MIL, my mother.

I do. Of course when I do this in person people look at me funny, but it makes her feel very comfortable and secure.
She, calls me Bhabi, which literally means "brother's wife" which I think is funny. Her husband calls me "Didi" which means "elder sister" in Hindi.
kinda funny
