Nurseries and Baby Gear

What is everyone spending on nursery furniture?

I just ordered my nursery furniture (at 12 weeks which is way early, I know, see post below). For three pieces - crib, armoire, changing table - I paid around $1100, which I think is a great deal considering all of my friends spent an average of $1500 - $3000 for their furniture.  But my husband and my mom were both shocked at the cost and expected furniture to cost much less. Also, my Baby Bargains book said that mid-range was around $800 for furniture.  So what did/will you ladies all spend and what did you get/what are you polanning to get?  I'm trying to get an idea what is typical.

Re: What is everyone spending on nursery furniture?

  • We're getting some stuff second-hand (its newer stuff)... I think we'll spend about $800-$1000 on all furniture and gear once it's all said and done.. but some of those spending trips will be on other's credit cards, not ours - i mean, big gifts from family and friends.

  • I'm planning on getting the crib, combo dresser and hutch. From what i've seen we'll probably spend around $1500. I will not be getting a changing table. I personally think they are a waste of money.
  • We got a convertible crib (w/ all the bedrails/attachments etc) and tall dresser for $1,700.  We also bought a glider for about $300.    We did not buy a changing table.  Although we might have spent more than some people do I am very happy with the furniture we bought and feel that we got what we paid for.

  • About $1000 (without delivery and setup) for crib, crib mattress, and dresser/changer combo. We got it on sale and it's not from walmart or target. You can get furniture cheaper if you go that route but if you're looking for more quality furniture you are going to pay around $1000 + so you got a good deal IMO (especially including armoire).
  • Rocker = $600

    Crib and Dresser = $2000

    Mattress: $300

My husband flipped when he found out how much the ones I wanted were. But he was a marshmallow when I was pregnant and said yes. Looking back at some of the more extravagant purchases, I would love to have that money back and go on a vacation. :)

  • We bought a convertible crib with all the rails/attachments/etc., crib mattress, dresser and upholstered glider for right around $2,000.  We ordered a changing station topper from a different company for about $120, but that's it, other than delivery charges.
  • I'm no good here, (we got the crib and a dresser for free), I will use the crib, not the dresser, DH is staining the crib to match my existing furniture, and my dad gave me a rocker that was my grandfathers, and I have one from my mom too...

However, when I was pricing out cribs, because I really don't love the one that we got for free, I was thinking around $1800 for the pieces that I wanted, that would have been my budget, so I think you got a great deal...

DH was WAY too realistic and would not let me purchase knowing we had for free...

  • We used an existing dresser and lazy-boy and purchased:

    - 2 cribs at $400/ea

    - Changing table from Target for $110

    - Another recliner rocker for $300

WOW - I've never added it all up but we purchased more than $1200.

  • We got a great deal from a family friend. We bought our furniture used, but we knew the owners and it was all high end and only 2 years old, hadn't been recalled, etc.

    Cherry crib: $100

    Matching dresser/changer: $250

Dutailer glider/ottoman: free (I did spend $160 on fabric and getting the pads reupholstered.)

    Armoire: free (already owned it.)

  • I spent only what I could afford.
  • We are ordering our furniture this weekend, and for the convertible crib/rails, dresser/changer and upholstered reclining rocker it is going to be about $2600. I am hoping that we can get use of this for more than one baby (this is our first) and the recliner/rocker is something that we plan to move into our bedroom once all of the babies are grown (it is a neutral color).

Will baby #3 be another girl?
