I am at my wits end and so I have sought out this board.
My daughter is just days shy of turning 1 and we are really having lactose issues. She was diagnosed as Lactose Intolerant at 3 months after 3 months of screaming, abdomin swelling, severe gas and a few other things. Things have gone great since we switched to Soy formula. We tried cheese and yogurt and the symptoms returned. We then put her on a dairy-free diet, which amazingly is kinda hard. We tried lower lactose formula to see if she could go on whole milk at 1 and it was a disaster and so she is on Soy milk and a dairy-free diet.
However, the tummy aches and bad gas are coming back again and so I wonder what else it could be. I was reading online about it and even things like butter can affect children severly lactose intolerant and I check, of course ours has buttermilk in it. I guess I am just wondering if anyone else is in this situation. What does your child have and what do you do to maintain it? Thanks!
Re: Does anyone have a child with lactose issues?
I'm pretty positive soymilk causes you to be gassy. I used to drink it, but switched to rice milk because I think I'm allergic to soy.
I did a little search because you got me curious, and this website seems to have a good explanation. It's not a medical article by any means but it seems to be a reliable source.

My husband is severely lactose intolerant. We are TTC.
Lactose is in cow's milk. Don't go near it. For my husband, even the Lactaid is hard on him. Butter is the WORST. I don't know why. If he has absolutely nothing with lactose in it for a couple of weeks his system builds up a little and a bit of a cookie or a little yogurt won't make him so sick. That is it.
Once you get used to cooking lactose free it isn't that bad but it is something you always have to think about. I have read more labels since I met him than I did in my entire life. I don't know what part of the US you are in but where we live there are tons of sheep and goat's cheeses available. DH is also totally fine with buffalo cheese (mozzarella d' bufala is common in Italy and can be purchased here). I recommend 101 Lactose Free Desserts cookbook. There are other cookbooks out there as well.
I know a lot of this is for future reference. Being lactose intolerant at such a young age is not common but, statistically, most of the world can't eat cow's milk by adulthood.
