DS told me yesterday while I was cleaning the bathroom he needed to pee-pee. I then put him on the potty he went I praised him and gave him his M&M. He then told me 5 mins later he needed to go again. So he went, more praise and M&M. 30 mins later DH got home and I told DS to tell daddy what he did...he then said again, again, again and went to the bathroom and went again. More praise and M&M. Today he was dry after a 2 hour 15 min nap so I asked him if he needed to pee-pee once again pee-pee, praise M&M this happened about 2 or 3x within 2 hours this afternoon until we left for dinner and put a diaper on him. On the way to dinner he said pee-pee I asked if he needed to pee-pee and he said yes so I told him to go ahead and pee-pee in his diaper. We got home and the before bed I asked him if he wanted to pee-pee in the potty he said yes he went again afterwards asking for an M&M. The problem is I think he is making himself go just to get an M&M. I know he is still very young especially for a boy so I'm not sure if I should keep going with it or stop b/c I don't want him hurting himself in any sort of way just to get an M&M after he pees. I mean it's not like he sits there for 10 mins trying to go he's done within 1 min but I just don't know if we should keep encouraging it or not.
Re: ? for those PTing or have recently.....
I would keep encouraging it--it's great progress. We didn't do the M&M's thing, but I have heard some kids do great with it and then others get really annoyed when you stop rewarding them
How old is he? I would consider going cold turkey--they have periods of readiness and you don't want to miss the window!
Well he isn't really telling me he has to go. I asked him about every 30 mins this afternoon and sometimes he would run to the bathroom and other times he would say no. Once he would go though he would then run to the bathroom 5 mins later and say "again" and make himself go again to get another M&M. So technically he's not coming to me and saying "go pee-pee" its more me asking him and if he says yes that great if not no big deal. He had no accidents from 4-8pm tonight. Except when we were gone 1 hour but he did just up and tell me then in the car pee-pee and that's when I told him to pee-pee in his diaper. I know 4 hours isn't long but it's a good start for a barely 2y/o.
