Success after IF

Did anyone do a "baby blessing" ceremony instead of a baptism?

I am planning on doing this, and I'm starting to research options.

Re: Did anyone do a "baby blessing" ceremony instead of a baptism?

  • if you are not religious enough to really believe in the promises made at a baptism, i think this is a nice option.

we're religious- and baptism means a lot to us... it's kind of annoying when random people come to our church just to get their child baptized- yet they never return after that - which really goes against what they promise at the altar to God.

I know I love it every time my pastor blesses my son when we get communion... i think a blessing ceremony would be nice- but not sure what type of pastor would do it? I know mine would want to baptize.

  • We did both a baby dedication and a baptism (I'm Catholic, DH is Southern Baptist).  Did you have any questions about it?

  • I am very spiritual and I attend a church semi-regularly, but its not a Christian church.  DH is pretty agnostic.  I want to do something that is spiritual for the babies and celebrate them by having a blessing ceremony at our home - probably led by the minister at my church.

I read somewhere - many years ago - about how rain on your wedding day is a blessing - and it could be collected and used to baptise a child.  It poured on our wedding day!  Thankfully, a friend collected the rain that fell on our wedding day and gave it to us.  We've been saving it for almost 5 years and I'd like to use it to bless the babies.

I realize that it would not be a baptism - since we're not Christian - and it would not be holy water.  But the fact that it is the water from our wedding day gives it very personal meaning to me.

I'm not sure about godparents, but I'd like to have family and close friends there and ask that they all provide spiritual guidance for our children, because I believe that everyone has a different spiritual path and I'd like them to have all the spiritual knowledge that they can (be it Christian, Jewish, Buddist, etc.).

  • we are actually scheduling a blessing for our daughter. I talked to the minister at the hospital I work for and he said he would meet w/us. He is very liberal though and believes that as long as you are committed to God it doesn't matter if you go to the same church every week.

He said he would want to go over our reasoning for a blessing and just a committment to God ceremony instead of a specific religion. Also he wants to just hear our views on baptism and how we came to the idea of a blessing ceremony.  He wants to know what we expect and how we would do a a ceremony where etc. Good Luck. We have thought long and hard to make this decision. We don't go to one specific church so we would feel horrible just using a church to bless her to a certain religion and then not take her there. Some think we are crazy for doing it but I feel strongly about having her blessed. I am a bit of a lapsed Catholic and DH never really went to church after being a teen.

  • I think it is a great idea! Are you a unitarian? I bet they do something like this.

We were both raised Catholic & do not want to raise our kids Catholic (I've told my husband he has to be fully in charge if he wants to do that) but I feel like our families expect something like a baptism when we have kids (and I think my husband kind of wants something too, perhaps just b/c all of his 9 nieces/nephews have had them), but I'm not sure what...I will be interested to see what ideas people give you! GL!

DH and I were both raised catholic.  I no longer follow the religion (neither does DH) but attend a UU church instead.  if we decide to do anything, it would be this.

  • It's not actually a UU church, but its kind of similar (better music than the UU churches I've been to).  Big Smile
  • we belong to a UU church :)  we will be doing a blessing ceremony for the babies when they are here.  it is a very personal spiritual experience, and i think its wonderful that you want to do that for your babies too!  most major religions do similar ceremonies, but they all mean different things based on the spiritual beliefs of the church or parents.  there is nothing any less special about a blessing or dedication than a baptism :)
