Trying to Get Pregnant

Do you already have an OB?

Do you already have an OB that you plan to use? Or will you wait until you are pregnant to figure that out? Currently, I have a OBGYN that I have gone for years, but will not use her when I get PG basically because she is in another town and delivers at a hospital I do not like. I'm just too lazy to switch! I start looking around and get overwhelmed and think maybe I'm putting the cart before the horse anyway.  So, have you already researched this? or will you do the majority of it once you are pregnant?

Re: Do you already have an OB?

  • i currently have an ob/gyn. i am thinking of switching to a midwife when i get pg.

  • nope!! you don't get one here until you are pregnant
  • I had planned to stick with my OB/GYN that I was seeing before I got pregnant, but had some issues with the practice (not involving the doctor).  That combined with wanting to deliver somewhere else made me decide to switch doctors.  I am now using someone that was recommended by a coworker and *love* him.
  • I've always seen the NP at the office I go to. Since its a large practice I will see a different OB each time I go in so I can meet them all not really a fan of that but they deliver in the hospital I work at and the hosptial's like a 2 minute drive from my house.

  • When we decided to TTC, I researched and selected a ob/gyn so that I would be all set when I got KU.  I even set up an appointments with her PA so that if I ever had to see her I would be confortable in my choice.  So I'm all set.  I even got her involved with meds and PNV and such prior to even starting.

  • Yes, I will use my current doctor. I love him! Smile
  • If I can keep my OB that I see now, I would be a happy girl.  He's the best doctor I've ever had.  If for some reason it's not going to work out, I will seek out a MW.

  • I only have a gyn. She is not an ob, so when the time comes i'll have her recommend one.
  • I was recommended my current Ob/gyn by some pregnant/previously pregnant women, so I chose him based on the fact that I wanted him to deliver my children. Plus, now that we've moved, his office (at the hospital) is only like 5 minutes away!

  • I will be sticking with the current doc that I've been seeing since my surgery when I was 16. I like her
  • I will use my current doctor he's great and right across the street from the hospital I plan to use.
  • I had an OB well before I was PG.  It sucks though because DH & I are moving about 2 hours away from where we live now in May 2 months before baby gets here so I will have to find a different OB soon.  I haven't started looking for one yet either.

  • I had a gyno and when I got pregnant my doctors office sent me to a Woman's Health Center. There are OB's, midwives, CNM, etc there.
  • I switched to new insurance about 5 months before we were TTC and I researched and found a doctor with her being my OB in mind. I wasn't all that impressed with the first appt. (my annual) and was less-than-thrilled with subsequent phone interaction, so I switched to a highly recommended guy here who I know delivers at the hospital I want. I made the switch about two months before my BFP.

So basically, I think it's helpful to make that decision before you get KU so that everything is lined up and ready to go when you do get pg. Plus, as soon as you see that second line, you'll be in a hurry to call the doc and get your first appt. scheduled. You don't want to have to just begin researching doctors at that point!

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • I had one but I think I'm going to switch. I LOVE my doc but I don't like their "practice" very much. I would havet o see wach of the docs since any one of them could deliver my baby. Also, I wasn't crazy about how they handled my m/c.
  • I currently have on ob/gyn but his wife is also just an ob. So I will use either of them!
  • I will keep using my OB/GYN that I have now.  I had just moved to this city when I got my 1st BFP and didn't have a doc picked out.  When I started to mc, I got a referral to his practice by a friend of a friend and they worked me in even though I'd never even been in before.  He helped me with the mc and did my lap surgery a few weeks later and was a pleasure (under the circumstances) to work with.  Hopefully, my next BFP will stick and I'll have a good reason to go see him this time!!

  • Here unless you are having troubles or considered high risk, your regular family doctor follows you through your pregnancy up until 28 weeks then you go to the Maternity Clinic at the hospital.
  • I had always seen a NP, so I needed a new Dr (OB). I had orginally planned on waiting til I got pg, but as you can see in my siggy, that I'm on cycle 15. I finally went to see the OB that I wanted to see at the clinic by me (my NP is not close to me). I had looked online at the clinic and they had a list with some info of all the Drs, so I found one that I was interested in and that's who I saw. I've only seen her once but I think she'll be fine.

Also under her name it says OB/GYN and Midwife. So I thought that might be a plus.

  • I don't have an OB; I have a PCP who does my Pap, etc every year.  I will probably go to the OB office most of my friends go to since they have midwives.

  • Thanks for all the responses! I guess I could always keep going to mine until I get KU then I could ask for a referral at the other hospital. That way I know I could at least get in to see a doc when those 2 lines show up! I am hesitant to ask friends/family for recs because I don't want them to know we're TTC and by asking, it'll automatically be assumed! We have to keep playing the "No kids for several years" card or else we'll be bombarded :)

  • When I moved to town, I picked my obgyn based on who I wanted to use during my pregnancy.  DH is a pediatrician and attends deliveries, so he had some definite opinions of docs that he did and didn't like.  I love the doctor I ended up with and, unless there are high risk issues involved that require me to go further away, I'll definitely use him.
***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.
  • Before we started TTC, I asked our PCP for a recommendation for an OB. I've been there twice so far and have liked everyone I've met with. I chose them because their practice includes midwives and I would like to do a natural birth.
  • Yes, but I am never going to her again due to some bad experiences. I am hoping to deliver at a birth center staffed by midwives.

  • My Dr. is an OB/GYN. I've been seeing him for years and would like to keep him.

  • I will use my ob/gyn I have now.  He is wonderful and I used him with my son.

  • My gyn is an ob/gyn, but I don't really like her. I will want to find a new dr. when/if I get PG. Actually, I'd love for my PCP to care for me throughout a PG because he is the only doctor in my life that I have really connected with.
  • I currently have an OB/GYN who is also a fertility specialist, so I'm covered all the way around. I don't plan on switching because I think she's awesome, although the hospital she delivers at is not in a good area
