How long are you supposed to be able to use one of these. My neighbor gave us a beautiful cradle type bassinet(it an old wood one with the rocker built into it) sorry it my description isn't great. I was wondering though because we're trying to put off the purchase of a crib as long as possible. Also how much padding does the mattress need? I ask this question because the mattress it comes with is extremely thin, but then again I'm not sure what to expect with these things. Any advice is greatly appreciated. TIA
Re: bassinet/cradle question
I read your descrip and know exactly what you are talking about because we have one too. DS was in it until about 4 months...ours is a family hierloom!
And we have about a 3 inch foam mattress in it...All was crafted by hand, so I don't know if the mattress was a real mattress or foam from a craft store.
I believe 2-3 months, maybe 4 depending on the size of the baby and the bassinet. Some have a higher weight limit then others. You can use a pack and play longer.
From the bassinets I have been looking at, they all say they are for newborns up to 15 lbs. Now that may not be the same for you, but that is what most of them are saying when I look. HTH. Also, I am unsure of how much padding it needs, I would say next time you are shopping, look at a bassinet at the store and look at the difference in thickness between the 2 and go from there.
I am so jealous that you got a beautiful bassinet for free! They are expensive, especially the old world styles.
Anyway, make sure the mattress you get isn't too thick/pillowy bc suffocation becomes an issue. This is why many crib mattresses are firmer nowadays. I know we all want our little one to be comfy like we are in our beds, but the firmer the better for their safety. DH made a comment like "lets get a pillow top mattress for him" I sweetly laughed at him bc he obviously didn't think of the potential hazard this would cause...
