Pumpers- help with let down...

I am going back to work for the first day tomorrow.  I am starting slowly with one day a week but I am still nervous/stressed about my supply.  We have been exclusively BF.  I have a great freezer stash but still..

I know I am stressed, and when I feel like this I have a hard time letting down for the pump.  Any suggestions?  Also how often should I pump?  Can you share your schedule?

Re: Pumpers- help with let down...

  • pump how often your child eats. simply as that.

as for help with letdown. there are several tips i can share.

bring something that smells like your child. or baby powder works.

    have a picture

heat- have a hot water bottle to place on your breasts before you pump. heat helps to have a faster letdown.

you need to drink a lot of water. will help with a faster flow.

  • when pumping I use a heating pad to help get more and faster let downs. ?After the initial milk comes out (I use compression during), I put the heating pad on my breasts while still pumping and then I can feel the 2nd let down coming and then I take the heating pad off and go back to compression during that let down. ?I usually get 3 let downs in a 30 min pump. ?When I was doing 20 min pumps (but more frequently) I would get 2 let downs.

  • I massage the girls a little before pumping.  I also rub my nips.  It sounds weird, but it works every time for me (and usually instantly).  I get a second let down after pumping for about 8 minutes, and the third let down around 15 mins.  I stop pumping after the third let down.

I have to pump 3x's a day at work to get enough for two bottles.

  • Currently packing pictures and a heating pad in my pump bag.  Thanks girls!  Keep the suggestions coming!

  • I had the hardest time w/my let down at work. I think I just don't respond well to the pump. Sometimes I would get a let down everytime and other days only one time when I tried three different times that day. I saw an LC who watched me pump. She told me it was anxiety and that pumping doesn't come naturally. It is a learned art that takes practice. Try what the pp said as far as bring a pic, or a baby blanket w/baby's scent, warm compresses, massage, etc. What I recently discovered that works great for me is to talk to dh who is home w/dd on the phone while I am pumping. I don't know if it's hearing the baby in the background or the fact that I'm not concentrating on pumping, but rather having a conversation. It takes my mind off of it and I get a let down almost everytime.

  • I suck with letdown @ work too since my job is pretty fast paced and I have to find time to pump in between meetings.  That combined w/ me worrying about how much milk I was (not) getting creates a vicious cycle.  It has gotten better though over the last couple months and what I've found to help me is reading and listening to my ipod w/ the volume cranked up during pumping so that I get my mind off the actual pump.
  • The heat, the pictures, the water all help... but in the end, it's all mental.  I pumped 3x per day until recently.  If you've ever had experience with self-hypnosis/relaxation techniques, now is the time to use them.  I have found that if I close my eyes and focus on relaxing my body while thinking about my baby, the letdown comes pretty easily.  It does take practice.
  • Read a magazine or talk to a friend on the phone - when you're not worrying about letdown is when it will naturally happen.  The only times I really had trouble were when I was stressed about something else.  Then I would call my DH, and after a couple minutes talking to him I would letdown.
