Ladies who had HELLP

I noticed from an earlier post that there are a number of us who had HELLP syndrome.  A few people mentioned some very high percentages for a predicted reoccurrence with a subsequent pregnancy.

Just wondering (if you feel comfortable sharing) if there's any particular reason why those percentages are so high? Were you found to have underlying blood clotting disorders?

I delivered my daughter at 29w after a very sudden onsent of PIH and then HELLP.  I met with a well respected MFM specialist after, did the genetic testing (found nothing) and was told that there was only a 2-6% chance of having HELLP again, but a 60-70% chance of getting PIH again (which could range from mild PIH to severe, but without other symptoms of pre-eclampsia or strain on the baby wouldn't necessarily be a reason to deliver).   The doc said my first HELLP experience wasn't a reason not to get pregant again.  Does this seem overly optimistic?

Re: Ladies who had HELLP

  • I  had HELLP. I have not been tested for underlying clotting disorders but my ob is very optimistic about me having healthy pregnancy. He said I have a 25% chance of the same thing happening again but if it does happen again, it will likely happen later in the pregnancy (I had DS at 32 weeks). Both my regular gyn/ob and the ob that did my c/s both were very encouraging about me having another baby (as long as I wait a year). My ob actually said he was happy I wanted another.

I am always surprised when ladies on here say their drs were discouraging. It makes me feel like I am missing something...I had a Class I HELLP, my bp was 214/115 and I lost half my blood supply after delivery and my drs are happy I want another baby!

  • I don't know why there is a  higher percentage of reoccurance, but I developed pre-eclampsia and HELLP with my twin pregnancy.. I also developed it this time, but it was later on in the pregnancy this time.
  • I am actually going to get a 2nd opinion this summer from a well respected High Risk OB and see what they say, just in case.  The reason that they were so cautious is becasue my son came at 26 weeks and my symptoms, disorder were very severe at 26 weeks.  Something about it being that early really raised my risk for a 2nd pregnancy.

Also, I'm 6 months post partum and still on blood pressure pills and still have some pretty intense swelling.  It's just taken a while for my body to bounce back so my doctors don't know how I could handle another pre-e pregnancy.  I've been tested for clotting disorders, etc. and they were all normal.  I do have a genetic marker of some sort that runs in my family that puts me at a higher risk

And it terrified my husband and my parents.  They were with me in the hospital from the beginning and they said "you didn't see you"...apparently I looked "grey" and my father had to leave the room at one point because he was crying (I was in and out and don't really remember much)...my husband was crying.  It just really scared them, and I don't know that I can put them or my DS through it again.

However, I do have a friend that had a baby boy at 30 weeks and is now in her 2nd pregnancy and has LOW blood pressure and is doing wonderfully.  I think I am more of the exception than the norm, so if your doctors are encouraging, and you are comfortable, I think that is great!

  • In my case, it was due the fact I still have high BP more than 2 years later.  I also have a strong family history of pre-e (mom, grandma, etc w/ multiple pregnancies).  I developed PIH pretty early, and had a hypertensive crisis at 23-24 ish weeks.  I also have a history of autoimmune issues which is yet another risk factor, including a clotting disorder where the results have been mixed.
