HELP: screaming baby

I don't know what to do...DS has either been screaming or sleeping or nursing today.  Earlier he had a few moments where, as long as I held the passi in his mouth, cuddled him tightly up against me, shushed, and bounced my knee, he wouldn't scream for a few minutes, but now even that isn't working.  He's flailing his arms when he screams as well.  There's only so much crying that each of us can do!!  Any thoughts/suggestions/advice??  Please?????

Re: HELP: screaming baby

  • Is his tummy hard? Does he have gas?

  • I have had those days! Sorry you are stressed. DD LOVED baths. That would usually calm her and then I would rock her with her paci in a dim lighted room. I found if she over-tired & over stimulated she was an absolute bear.
  • Try standing in the bathroom with the faucet going - that often worked with DS.  or the vacuum?  Loud static?  Car ride?

So sorry - we've all been there.  Hope it gets better soon!!

  • white noise- vaccum cleaner, hair dryer, kitchen exhaust fan

gas drops, bicycle legs gently, bring legs to chest

swaddle, then bounce with a side laying or stomach position

if it's gas/colic you might want to try gripe water

    warm bath?

Good luck! My DD had terrible colic, I understand how helpless you can feel?

  • If you have gas drops, use those.  Also, we hold DD with our hand on her chest, our fingers under her arm pits to supprt her with her legs dangling...while doing this we pat her back and this helps her gas.  If it's not gas, try the happiest baby on the block method...not all the s's work for us, but we have found shushing in her ear (as loud as she is crying) and holding her on her side while rocking her from side to side helps.

    Good luck!

  • I second the bath suggestion. If DS has been whiney, we'll get in the tub together. He loves the warm water. Or if you swaddle, you may wish to try that and put him in the swing with some soothing music or white noise.

  • If none of these suggestions work put the baby in a room and close the door for a couple of minutes just to compose yourself again. Sometimes my DS cries and all he wants is to be on his stomach for a while.
  • My DS is doing the same thing, we are thinking it might be gas. He loves to sit up on our chest and watch the tv or if I am on the computer what I am doing, that will calm him down a lot to. Also, be sure to keep your voice calm as long as your voice is calm the baby shouldn't get any more upset. But that would also be in a perfect world :)
  • First of all, take a deep breath. I know it's times like what you're describing nearly pushed me over the edge. *hugs* Secondly, just like PP's said, there are so many things to try, and, it really is different each time! One night a swaddle will work, the next he'll fight it to no end. One night, a bath will calm him, yet two days later, he will flail around and scream... As a mom of two boys, each labeled "colicky" by their pedis, there are days when I doubt my mothering capabilities, days when I ask myself if my anti-depressant mess are really doing their job... You know? So my best piece of advice is remember you're a good mom! There is nothing you're doing wrong! Some babies just cry.
