tell me about your training potty...

I think I want to buy one for DS. He's very interested when DH or I go potty. I figured maybe if we put one in the restroom, just so he can get use to it, etc. However, I have heard that I want one that can go from the little toilet one to the one that I can put on the big toilet.. make sense? i don't know where to even start looking.

TIA.

Re: tell me about your training potty...

  • I bought 2 different kinds -- and they're not expensive so that is totally reasonable.

    1.  A baby bjorn chair.  It's an independant seat and lives in our master bath.  She would sit on her chair at the same time we sat on our toilet. (ahh, such bonding!  Wink ).  For the longest time it was unfortunately the only potty she'd go poo in -- I think she liked that her feet could be fully on the ground and give her the ability to push more like when she would squat when hiding behind the couch for her normal poo.

    2.  The little puffy seat that just goes on top of the main toilet.  That is in the second bathroom set up with a stepstool.  For obvious cleaning purposes, we prefer her to use that and she does almost all of the time now.

I like having stuff for her in both bathrooms so we don't feel like we *have* to go to one or the other.

  • BRU had quite a few that go from training ptty, to a seat for the regular potty and step stool. I think mine is supposed to do all that (safety 1st brand), but she has no intrest yet so I haven't tried it out.

  • I got DS's at target.  I think it is safety first brand, i'm not sure.  The top part goes on to the potty and the bottom turns into a step stool.  I started training DS by letting him go potty with us and sit on his little potty.  At first he sat down clothes and all and then gradually we took them off.

  • DD likes the potty ring that goes on the real toilet. I think it came from Walmart, it's a blue ring with handles and a white padded seat. We also bought one from BRU that goes from floor to toilet, but she hates it and has never used it (she pretty much always poops on the potty using her other seat). I think she doesn't like it because it doesn't have handles and it's not padded. She does keep a hold of those handles when she's perched on the potty.

How funny - I could have pretty much written this one word for word!  These seats and this system worked well for us with Maren, and we'll plan for the same with Blake when it's his time to train.

  • After reading lots of reviews, I got Owen the Baby Bjorn potty and Baby Bjorn ring to go on top of the potty. ?He occasionally sits on the one on the floor, but we haven't started training yet.
  • I have two:

    1.  A plain Target brand one.   It doesn't do anything special.  I figured I didn't get a song when I peed...  ;)  We just set it up near the potty and it worked great.  Cleans up well, too.

    2.  The one that goes over the potty.  We use this one now.

  • We have 2.

One is the free-standing Safety 1st.  The seat is designed to be able to switch to a seat that sits on the regular toilet, but I didn't find it to be very stable at all.

The other is the Bjorn seat that goes on the toilet.  I like it because it's got a dial that so you can tighten the seat to fit firmly.  That's what we've been using with Hannah so far, mainly because we only have one tiny bathroom and the free-standing one gets in the way.  However I'm rethinking this, because when she gets to the point where she'll go by herself, she'll have to push the stepstool over every time and put the seat on (at least until she learns how to use the toilet without it).

  • I totally lied.  I was going to buy the Target brand one, but ended up getting the Safety 1st one instead.
