External cephalic version (ECV) for breech - experiences, please

If you've had one (or more):

How far along were you when they tried to turn the baby? Did they then induce you right away or wait?

Who did it (your OB, someone else - was it just one person or multiple people doing it?)

Did it work?

DS is still breech, and my new OB was already trying to schedule a C-section (one more reason I think I need a new OB)!  I'd really love to avoid one, and know there's still time for the baby to turn, but was curious about people's experience with this procedure.  My OB made it sound like a bad idea (but everything I'm reading is saying it's a fairly low-risk procedure, although painful for mommy!)

Re: External cephalic version (ECV) for breech - experiences, please

  • I have had 2 friends who tried one. ?Both were about 36-37 weeks. ?Neither was successful, but one baby flipped on her own a week after the ECV (when she was 37 weeks). They both said they were super painful. ?How far along are you? ?I know that being on your hands and knees (like leaning on an exercise ball) is a good position to be in as much as possible to help the baby flip on its own. ?Good luck!

  • There's a website for techniques for getting the baby to turn - everything from putting a bag of ice down low on your belly so the baby turns away from that, to certain yoga positions, to accupuncture and chiropracty.

My DD was breech for a long time, but turned on her own before it was an issue - I looked into this though.

     spinningbabies.com maybe?

You may want to page EMT.  I think she just tried a lot of that stuff and it actually worked for her!

    GL!

  • Good call on paging EMT!

This totally sealed the "I need to find a new OB" deal for me :)  (she couldn't even discuss other things I could try to avoid the c-section - argh!)

  • At 29w they told me my baby was breech but they weren't worried about it. At 32w she was still breech and my midwife gave me a handout with exercises (really just positions to sit/lay in for 10-15 min) and a referral to a chiropractor to try to help the baby flip. I go back tomorrow for my 34w appt and don't think she's turned yet. I haven't been great about doing the exercises though. I went to the chiropractor for the first time this past Fri and go again tomorrow night. I'm supposed to go 2x/wk until she turns. If that doesn't work in a few more weeks, he's going to try moxibustion (from accupuncture- that's also what worked for EMT). And if that still doesn't work then I'll try ECV. There are definitely things to try before jumping to c-section!! At 31w I wouldn't be too too worried yet though. There's still lots of time for the baby to turn. I keep telling myself I won't freak out about it til 36w. Then I have permission to start worrying Smile

  • I had one but it didn't work, I ended up with a scheduled C. ?Full description in my so-called bio. ?

DD was breech the entire time. ?DS was transverse til 34w. ?Dr's don't worry til 36weeks, and even then most do turn by birth. ?

If you have low fluid or a large baby, or if the baby is positioned goofy, your chances are lower for the kid to flip or for the version to work. ?But hell, I figured 50/50 is better than 0. ?Page me if you have questions ok ?

  • DD was breech the whole time. Footling. I had the version at 37 weeks and it was unsuccessful.  She tried 3 times (each attempt took about 30 seconds).  Scheduled the c-section for 38.5 weeks. . . I was 4 cm and completely effaced and she didn't want me going into labor.

I had an 8 lb. 15 oz. baby. . . I just don't think there was room for her to turn at 37 weeks.

Next time I would try accupuncture and the chiropractor. . . I don't think any of the "exercises" that they recommend really doing anything statistically speaking.

  • she wants to schedule a c-section at 31 weeks for a breech baby??  I would sooner have one of those crazy unassisted births.  Seriously.  My midwife wouldn't even talk to me about options until 36 weeks.  31 weeks is plenty of time to turn!

I would have done an EV though.  The way it was presented to me.. if it doesn't work you have a c-section.  If there are complications with the procedure you have a c-section (they don't do it until you are full term). So there is no harm in trying.

DD turned at 35 weeks I think. Something around there.  I had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery at 41 weeks.
