Freezing food: cheapest jars/ containers?

I am trying to find a place to buy inexpensive jars/ containers to freeze food in.

Where do/ did you buys them?

Do mason jars require anything spevial to close them other than just twisting the lid on? I thought I remembered that you have to seal them in a special way.

  • My glass storage i bought on sale at belk's and walmart for like a 12 piece for 20.00

Or mason jars I have gotten on CL, Freecycle, and yard sales. I don't do anything special to them when I freeze things in them.

  • A dozen mason jars at walmart isn't too expensive, and you use them again and again and again.  Otherwise, check used venues like garage sales, salvation army, etc.
  • Might be obvious, but if you buy things like jars of jelly, pickles, etc, you could save them and remove the labels to use them.  Whatever's cheapest, right?Wink That's pretty cheap.  And you can always check out Goodwill or something.  Glass jars/mason jars might be easy to find if you check back once a week or something.

  • Most glass jars are NOT made for freezing and are more likely to break. You need to get the specific kind of jar that is made to withstand freezing. Check Craigslist to see if people will sell their freezer jars for cheap.

Freezer-safe canning jars will either have one-piece twist lids or flat lids with metal bands. In heat canning, the lids are one-use, but since you are just storing things and not actually canning you should be able to get many uses out of each lid.
