2nd Trimester

reading to baby

I really enjoy reading and plan on reading to the baby a lot. I have heard that it is good to read to baby "in utero" what are youre thoughts on this and when should one start??

Re: reading to baby

  • DH reads fairy tales to the baby when we go to bed and has been for a couple weeks now. I doubt it actually affects anything, but I get a nice story so I encourage it :)

  • I read to the baby.. I have been for awhile now, I don't remember when I started. I just read out loud when I read or i'll read it one of the little books I have bought for it!
  • There is actually a "Oh the Places You'll Go" that is meant for reading in utero.  I read it and got a bit sappy...it's very sweet!

  • Most places I've read say that babies can heard voices from the outside around 19 weeks... I started a little before that.

I've also seen a lot of support that reading the same books over and over (or music) will help soothe baby when they're born!  I have a few CD's I play and a few books DH and I read every night.  (DH feels silly doing it but I want Kenna to be used to both of us so bedtime isn't always my job, haha!)

  • Thank you for sharing that!  I'm going out tomorow to look for the book!

Things I did different with this pregnancy:
    1. Waited TTC until after I had 3 normal menstrual cycles.
    2. Got a new OB - amazing man who listened!
    3. 200 mg progesterone until 12 weeks
    4. Daily lovenox injections
  • Actually I've heard that it doesn't matter what you do, if you read to baby or not.  Baby hearing your voice is just as good as reading to your belly.  I sing in my car and talk with my husband but I don't read to my baby.
  • I'm going to start reading here in about a week or so. Our church worship music is VERY loud and I'm waiting until I feel the baby react to the music as I've heard from every expecting lady at church (and boy there are alot) that their babies wake up and react to the music and base.

Also- I'm saving money to buy the Harry Potter books on tape. I am a Harry Potter freak and DH and I have decided that's what we're going to read aloud to the baby first. =) My friend has a 7 month old and while he is playing on his own she puts on the books on tape instead of TV or music in the background and he LOVES it!

  • i've been reading alice in wonderland aloud. ?it's been a good time and even if baby doesn't hear it i definitely enjoy it :)
  • My DH reads that "Oh the Places you go" book to our baby about once a week. I have a few books I read to the baby from time to time. Last week I was at the office late so I read her/him some of the contracts I was working with. Perhaps it may jump start the babies career :) Just kidding.
  • I only read to her when I'm alone... i just feel so crazy doing it. I'm sure it will get to feeling more "normal" before shes born right?

  • DH reads a Dr Seuss book to the baby every night and then I read a few chapters of a book to DH (We're reading Janet Evanovich's number series). Its a great way to spend time with DH and its a bonding experience for DH and baby. We just have to buy a new book every week or so because I get sick of hearing the same story over and over. haha
