TTC After a Loss

My first acupuncture appointment (long)

So, yesterday afternoon I had my first acupuncture appointment.  I think it went pretty well.  When I arrived, I filled out a long form about my medical history, then I sat down with the doctor (she has a Ph.D in Neuroscience from the Medical College of Ohio, and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine) for about 25 minutes, going over my temp charts and discussing my miscarriage and AF.  Then she took my pulse and examined my tongue (which I guess is routine practice in Chinese medicine, as the tongue is sort of like a map of the body).

She said that she agreed with my OB that there doesn't seem to be any major problems, but that acupuncture and some dietary changes could help lengthen my luteal phase (which is currently 11-12 days) and help blood flow to the uterus to help reduce a cyst I have in the area as well as get AF moving more freely and alleviate the intense cramping I get each month.  She said that she recommended weekly acupuncture treatments from now until I get pregnant, and then we will re-assess after that.

The actual acupuncture itself was painless - just a little pinch at first.  She dimmed the lights and put on soft music, and I lay there for about 20 minutes. The consultation and initial treatment cost $95, and each subsequent treatment will be $75.  I am looking into it, but I don't think insurance covers it unless it is prescribed by my OB.

Sorry this is so long, but I thought it might help if any of you are considering this avenue.  I will let you all know if I see any positive effects!

  • There is also acupressure available if some people don't like the fear of needles. There are relative and very common. I went to school 5 years ago for Massage Therapy in a high credited school for massage (it wasn't for me after school, but it was fun to learn- so at least it wasn't a complete waste!).

  • oops! sorry -

    didn't mean to post that ! ;)

where are you going for accupuncture? It sounds very promising - I tried it from Dec 07 until I got my BFP last July 08

I really hope it works for you !

and yes, I'm keeping my fingers crossed  too that we both have Halloween themed b day parties for years to come

did you decide about the ova cue? I asked my RE and she just rec. First response OPK 's -

  • Hi Emma,

I'm going to see Dr.Zheng in Needham.  In my research, I came across the Center for Complementary Medicine in Coolidge Corner, which I think might be near you.  They didn't get back to me for several days, and by that time I had already made an appointment with Dr.Zheng.  We'll see what happens!

DH and I decided to wait one more cycle before investing in the OvaCue. I actually went and bought the digital OPK this week, which will hopefully be easier to read.

Best of luck with your move!  I"ll bet Dallas is beautiful now (it's snowing again here)!

  • I?ll be interested to hear more. I?m thinking about trying acupuncture, too. I have had some acupressure done, and i liked that, but I?d like to try acupuncture. I?m just a little concerned about them wanting to do herbs, too.

  • I've been doing acu since September and really enjoy it. Acu is supposed to be helpful w/ i/f issues. While it hasn't helped me get pg I've found it to be helping in other areas.

My initial consulation was 20-30 minutes and I got a 30 minute treatment afterwards. That apt was 65.00. All apts afterwards are 60 minutes and are 65.00. He's a small private practice that doesn't bill insurances so we're paying for it ourselves. We "might" be able to get rembursed through dh's fsa account.

  • thought i'd add on here in case anyone reads this who wants as much info as possible...  i started fertility acupuncture august of 08 after trying to get pregnant for about 14 months and six weeks after i started i got my positive.  it was so relaxing, and my acu. did put me on an herbal regimen to stimulate blood flow.  luckily my insurance did cover my sessions - which were $90 each.  they advised me to have weekly sessions.  i haven't gone back since my m/c though.  i may pick it back up in the spring.
  • She didn't prescribe me any herbs this time out, although she did give me some pretty drastic dietary changes:  Cut waay back on refined sugar and dairy and no caffeine.  I hope I can stick to it!   It's for a good cause!

  • I recently started acupuncture too.  I am reading The Infertility Cure.  It is about TCM and goes over a lot of the whys and hows.  It also teaches you about lifestyle and diet changes that compliment your Eastern diagnosis.  I found the book on ebay for $5.  I blog about it if you want more info the link is in my signature.
