Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Newbie -frustrated 2nd Chemical Pregnancy

Hello everyone.

I've joined this group because I feel so lost and confused.  I started TTC in August 08.  I got a BFP my first cycle.  My hcg never rose past 49 and so it was a chemical pregnancy.  The three cycles after that failed and recently on my fourth cycle I got another BFP.  This time it was much worse than the first.  Because my hcg doubled perfectly for the 1st week and just as I was about to hit the start of my 5th week - the hcg went down again and the doc told me to wait for my period.  My second chemical pregnancy.

The ray of sunshine is that I can conceive on my own but just cannot sustain a pregnancy.  I've researched this and it seems that the top three causes would be

1. chromosomal issues with the embryo

2. abnormal uterus (cysts, polyps)

3. hormonal (low progesterone)

and then there is the very rare case of your body attacking the pregnancy with it's antibodies  (usually found in people with arthritis and lupus).

I'm going to the RE this Thursday but i'm just so defeated right now.  This is my second angel to be taken from me.  I'm taking all my vitamins, haven't had a sip of alcohol, chocolate, coffee in almost 7 months.

I guess I'm just looking for some hope and maybe your guys experience with chemical pregnancies.  This is my second one and I just feel like such a failure.

Does anyone here know of someone to have a successful pregnancy after repeated chemical pregnancies?

  • I'm really sorry, hon . . . I don't know anything about chemical pregnancies but I'm sorry for your losses and I wish you luck with your TTC journey. I hope you get some good advice from the doctor!

  • sgrl - i hope so too.  I have a great RE and I'm just "so lost" right now.  Although alot of people don't find it in the same level as someone who has m/c at later stages of pregnancy , a chemical evokes the same feelings.

The joy of finding out you are pregnant.  Then confirming that your pregnancy will fail.  You usually wait around for your hcg to drop and af to come - periods are heavier than usual and it just plain old sucks.

Same feelings of disappointment and anger about your situation are unavoidable.

    thanks for your reply!!!!

  • I know nothing of chemical pregnancies either, but I wanted to say I'm sorry for your losses. There are plenty of women here who have had chemical pregnancies and I hope they can give you some answers. GL.
  • Thank you ladies!  I'm trying as much as I can to figure out why I keep having early miscarriages.  I will keep you guys updated!  This website is a God send.. my husband is tired of hearing me talk about the same things over and over...

thanks for hearing me out Sleep

  • I, too, don't hav emuch information for you, but I did want to share my condolences. ((hugs))

  • I'm very sorry you are experiencing this.  I had a chemical pregnancy in October, and started doing progesterone blood tests the cycle after.  They not only discovered I wasn't ovulating, but that my progesterone was really low.  I always had a feeling that was the reason for my situation, although they didn't confirm it for certain.  I'm meeting with my doctor in a week to discuss with her what I CAN do for low progesterone.  If I should happen to get PG again, I don't want low progesterone to cause another m/c.

  • I had a chemical pregnancy a few months ago.  It is a tough thing to go through.  Remember that they are more common than you think and it may be just really crumby luck.  As with other miscarriages, sometimes you never know the reason and sometimes that's the hardest thing to deal with.  Hopefully your doctor will help you with some answers so that you don't have to go through it again.

I have seen girls on other boards that had several chemical pregnancies before conceiving sucessfully.  You may want to ask on the Success after a Loss board.

  • I apologize and hope you are not offended with my ticker. I spent last year on this board. I had losses...one was a chemical pregnancy. The first was a stillborn son, second was a chemical, third was a blighted ovum. I am currently 21 weeks pregnant with a healthy (fingers crossed it stays that way) baby. They believe I had a clotting disorder. I think seeing and RE is a great idea. If you can get pregnant easily, which I could also, they can help you figure out what it is that is making you lose the pregnancy and help you prevent a loss in the future. It is usually something very treatable. I was on progesterone in the first trimester, no folic acid and lovenox...they believe I had a pregnancy induced clotting disorder. I know how sad and frustrating it is, it was the story of my life last year, but just don't give up hope and keep trying until you get your answers. Best of luck to you. You can always page me if you need to talk or have any questions.
