Help w/ menu for playgroup

I am starting a playgroup and the first playdate is at my house. There will be 5 moms and 6 kids ranging in ages 18mo-4 yrs.  I will be cooking lunch for everyone. I don't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen once they are there, so anything that can be prepared ahead of time would be great. I'm thinking BBQ pork in the crockpot for the adults and maybe some kids will eat that too. Any ideas for a kid-friendly lunch and dessert would be great!

Re: Help w/ menu for playgroup

  • My playgroup only does lunches for moms so I'm not a whole lot of help.  But most of the moms prepare a salad (like Chinese chicken, etc.) and sometimes homemade soup.  Definitely a crockpot meal is a good idea.

  • I usually make homemade mini pizzas on english muffins ahead of time, put them in the fridge, and bake whenever we are ready

  • You'll probably be a hero to the moms with fussy eaters, not to mention the kids if you do a nice tray of chicken nuggets and fries.  Then, as a healthy go-with serve carrot and celery sticks and a ranch dip.  I like your BBQ idea.  It sounds delious.

  • We do breakfasty things at my play group.  I think pulled pork sandwiches sound great.  As for kids, I would go with some easy standards: chicken nuggets, grilled cheese sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, cheese, graham crackers.

Also, you'll be setting the standard since it's the first play group.  If you go too elaborate, people may start trying to one-up each other at every meeting.  Simple is best, I think.

  • I agree with going simple :) Our playgroup does mostly breakfast/brunch type stuff, and the babies are a bit younger (around 1), but usually it's some sort of egg casserole, banana bread, diced fruit and veggies. I usually also put out mini bagels and cream cheese.

We did have one put out lunch stuff once and it was veggie/bean soup in the crockpot, banana bread, a cheese and fruit tray, and mini croissants.

  • Meatballs is something you could also throw in a crock pot.
  • our old playgroup stuck with simple foods... fruits or veggie tray.. maybe a dip for moms (mexican layered, pizza, etc), chicken salad was always a hit, one mom made soup one cold winter day which was much appreciated.. even the kids liked the taco soup.  I did do tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches once... I did baked mac 'n cheese once and had fruit and veggies on the side (trays)... I did cheesy grits and little sandwiches. one mom used to make an awesome breakfast casserole! mmmm

I would pick one thing baked and then simple finger foods for the rest. not a full meat and potatoes kind of meal.  something easy for everyone to grab a little of and go back for more.
