Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Think Mirena is worth it for just a year?

I missed the window to get it last year before our deductible started over, so to get it now would cost us almost the entire thing, about $1000.  DH and I are (because we're completely insane, of course) starting to talk about when we want to try for #2, and the earliest would be about this time next year.  So I'd only have the Mirena in for maybe 11-12 months.  Would you get it at that cost, for that amount of time?  I'm debating just getting back on BCP b/c it's cheaper, but I always got nasty migraines on a few different types of pills before.  And we're not doing condoms, or the FAM--too risky!  (I'm hopefully starting my internship this summer so can't have a baby before summer '10.)

  • Hell to the no.  But I've had a lot of problems with my Mirena and I'm having it removed next week.  Mine was covered under a $30 copay, though.  I think $1K is a lot for just one year of b/c.  Maybe it's a little retro, but what about a diaphram in your situation?

  • I've had a few friends with serious problems with IUD's (the kind of problems that can cause fertility issues) so I personally wouldn't do an IUD until I was done having kids.

I choose to not use hormonal birth control also, and we have been really happy with condoms, or the sponge.  Both are not great and don't allow for anything spontaneous, but they are working for the time being!

  • Personally, I wouldn't pay the full price for it. If you could do it for just a copay, I'd say go for it, but $1000 is a lot for just using it for a  year. I had mine put in this past April (DS was almost 3 mos old) and its been GREAT! We will probably start to try again this time next year, and I am glad I got it. But, I would have looked at other options if I didn't have insurance that would cover it.
  • I love my Mirena, and would have gotten it even if I only planned on keeping it in for a year. But NOT FOR $1000. I agree with other posters - maybe try a diaphragm or the sponge.
  • No, not for a year. I have had it for over 3 months and it has taken time for my body to get used to it. You can spot for up to 6 months as your body adjusts to it. I still spot every time we have sex. It's not much but it's kind of annoying. Plus, I've gained weight. I hate that. We want three years between DD and DC#2 so that is why I got it. If I had it to do over I wouldn't get it.
  • I paid full price but we knew we'd use it for 4 years. No, I wouldn't have gotten it for just a year. You can buy almost any kind of reliable birth control for less than $1000.
