Flu shot for you DC???

Did/have any of you vaccine your child with the flu vaccine???

I took Mikey to the pedi last month for his 6 month checkup, and he received his flu shot (even though I am still not to happy that I actually gave it to him..he was miserable for days after getting it :o( I gave in because I do work in a clinic where people do come in with colds/cough/flu and he was premature and on oxygen after birth. I received my flu vaccine (but don't think I'll get it again...) thinking that since I was still nursing that I would pass on my immunity to him.

He is supposed to go back for his 2nd flu shot next week because babies who have never received the flu vaccine need to get it twice (1 month apart) the first time they receive this vaccine. Every year after this one will only be once. I am on the fence about whether or not to take him back to complete the vaccination??!!!??

  • i did...mady got her influenza vax at her 6 mth visit...then 1 month later got her booster. she was cranky for a day after the vax but the booster didnt even make her cry. it was the 1st time ever that she didnt cry during a vax.

i would complete the vax and give him the booster.

  • I gave Sophie the flu vaccine at 18 mths and then again at 19.5 months.  She didn't have any reaction afterwards.  I also had second thoughts but in the end I am glad I did it.  If I were you, I would take him back for the second dose of the flu vaccine.  Just my opinion : )

  • We opted against giving Mikey the flu shot. We were asked at both his 12 month and 15 month visits, but we haven't changed our mind since then. We believe that the flu shot will only protect against certain strains and the chances of Mikey getting one of those strains is pretty slim so why give him yet another shot.
  • I did not give Alexis the flu shot.  I have never gotten it myself either.  I stay home with her and I felt that it was ok to not give it to her.  I did not want to risk any reaction from it and I also did not like the idea that the flu shot is the only vaccine that contains mercury still and that is not a chance I wanted to take.

  • Riley got both parts of her flu shot. She got the first part at her 6 month check up and the 2nd part 2 weeks later. I was iffy on giving it to her but my doctor highly recommended it and Riley is around a lot of people on a daily basis so I felt it was definitely needed.

  • We plan on giving it to Olivia. DH caught the bug this winter and was quarantined from us for days because Olivia was so young. The doctor warned that it is really bad when young infants get it and is most fatal to them and the elderly. If you already gave him the first, I would get the follow-up one. But do what you think is best, as always.
  • Zoe got hers at 6 and 7 months. She didn;t have a reaction to it at all. My best friend's son got pneumonia that started with a flu, i didn't want to take any chances with my baby!
  • I gave it to Alex the first year he was born, and then never again. I dont know if it was coincidence or not, but he was SO sick that I swore off the flu shot. I wont ever have him get it again and I wont be giving it to Max either.

  • I always get the flu shot for myself (I have gotten the flu before only when I didn't get the shot).  DH gets it, too, especially since he is a doctor and around sick people.  And we get it for Cedric, too.
  • PS: Our pediatrician uses a flu vaccine that does not contain thimerisol/mercury.
  • Does anyone know if geting the flu shot while PG covers the baby? I got the flu shot at 37 weeks and gave birth at 39 weeks.

My husband has not had the vax (and has not caught anything...yet) so it would be good to know if the baby is covered.

I am personally curious to know, plus it'd be good to know for all the expecting moms out there (who SHOULD get the flu shot... I had it twice in my first 3 months of PG and it was an absolute nightmare).

  • I was trying to find out myself because I got the flu vaccine first because I am still breastfeeing and thought that Mikey would benefit from passive immunity, but my pediatrician said that she still recommended that he get vaccinated since I work in the clinic examining sick patients and such??!!??
