So I see a lot of you arent using crib bumpers, because (I think) there is a slightly increased risk for SIDS (yes?). And then I see a lot of you say you are using the breathable bumpers. Okay...well here is my dumb question. So the ones that come in the cute little bedding sets-are they NOT breathable? They are all cotton, arent they? So what are the breathable ones made of, or how are they different? Sorry but I have just started looking online at all this stuff and its still kind of overwhelming. Thanks.
Re: dumb crib bumper question
Here's one that they have at target. It looks like mesh to me. Could be wrong. Check it out!

What makes the cute cotton ones non-breathable is the dacron fill in the bumper themselves. The dacron is made from polyester and can trap carbon monoxide which the baby then could re-breathe.
In addition to no bumpers, no comforters/quilts, pillows or stuffed animals should be allowed in the crib. Just baby. There are lots of sleeping ensembles which keep baby warm.?
Here is a good article about bumper pads and why people are for and against them. After reading this, I am not sure that I would even do the breathable ones.
Hope it helps: https://babyproducts.about.com/od/recallsandsafety/a/bumpersafety.htm
Ok, I knew the difference, but I followed the link and now I have a question...
Looking at the breathable bumper...um, it isn't exactly a bumper...besides making a barrier so baby can't put his or her little arms or leg through, what exactly is the difference between that and not using anything?
A bumper I thought was supposed to be padded so when they start rolling around, they're not 'bumping" into things??
Am I missing something?
I believe you are correct in that the bumper pad was just that...a pad to prevent bumps. back in the day when the slats were wider on cribs it also protected little hands, feet and heads from going through.
They are saying that having the natural flow of air around the baby rather than ANY material guarding the rails could prevent SIDS. When they are so young they aren't going to be moving enough to hit their head and cause injury.
Nevertheless, on that SIDS.org it says nothing is to be in the crib...from blankets to bumper cribs to toys to stuffed animals! And to me that includes the breathable material too!
