Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Does DS need teeth for these things?

I hear a lot of people talking about puffs and shredded chicken and other finger foods. My question is does DS need to have teeth to ahve these things? Until he gets teeth, do I just stick with the purees?

Also, if he does not need to have teeth, what kinds of things can I give him that don't require teeth. We are currently working our way thru all the stage ones and will be moving to the stage 2s probably next month.

any suggestions of new things to give him would be great. And please school me on whether or not he needs teeth for all of these things?

Thanks.

Re: Does DS need teeth for these things?

  • No, he does not need teeth. They tend to use their gums even if they have teeth. My son has a mouth of full of them and he still uses his gums. I did not start with table food until about 8-9 months. I went through all stage one and stage 2 and some of three before moving to table foods.

When you are ready and get through stage one and two (or whenever you feel comfortable), you can do mashed potatoes, veggies (cooked untl they are very soft), pasta (cooked until they are very soft), puffs, small pieces of crackers...

    Good luck

  • From what I understand, puffs pretty much melt in the mouth, so teeth probly aren't needed for those. We haven't started meat yet- pedi asked at 6 months that we don't start meat yet, so we haven't.

wholesomebabyfood.com has some charts about what foods to give when, so I'd try that for new ideas. HTH

  • My 11 m/o doesn't have any teeth yet and she eats all of those things. She pretty much eats whatever we're eating- last night for dinner she had roast beef with roasted potatoes, onions and peppers. Babies have very tough gums and they generally get their front teeth first. If you think about it, you don't chew with your front teeth anyhow- you only use the front teeth for biting.?

That being said, your baby is still pretty young so I don't know what if any finger food type of things I would suggest just yet. Dd didn't start solids until 9 months by which point she was able to go straight to table food. That's?generally?not going to be the case with a younger infant such as yours. ?

  • Thanks ladies. I am not thinking about starting table foods just yet, as I am still trying to work my way thru all of the purees. But I was just wondering and trying to get ideas. I was under the impression that he would need some teeth to have these things. I will probably start table foods around 8 or nine months.

    Thanks.
