Parenting after a Loss

WOrk maternity leave question...

When did you begin your maternity leave?

At my work, I have a 7 day "elimination" period before STD kicks in....  If I work up until day before delivery, then my "elimination" week (which I would take paid time off) would co-incide with my 6wks STD... so really, only 5 weeks paid under STD (make sense)

HR lady suggested I begin leave 2 weeks prior to due date.... and then elimination period will be "over" before I deliver.  STD will begin on date of delivery, and be for 6 wks (assuming vaginal birth;  8wks for CSection)

but... as we know, due dates aren't set in stone, so I don't want to waste my time off work twiddling my thumbs....

Re: WOrk maternity leave question...

  • let's see....I was due 8/2 and was forced to stop working 7/18. So about 2 weeks before my due date. Andy ended being born the following Sunday 7/27 after I went on leave. I think a week before is perfect, but like you said....you never know when the baby will come! Better to be prepared and have nothing to do.

  • DS was due 10/26. He was born 11/3 (Monday). My last day at work was 10/31 (Friday). My std didn't start until 14 days from 11/1. My FMLA started 11/3. I wanted as much time with DS as possible rather than sit on the couch by myself waiting. As long as I felt okay I went to work!
  • I worked up until my delivery date, and am glad I did. ?I want every day of my 12 weeks with baby. ?I also had to use a week of vacation before std kicked in.

  • my insurance was the exact same way [damn elimination period!!]. I was due October 25th and my last day was October 24th, which was a friday. I just wanted to finish up the week. I ended up giving birth on the 26th, so I didn't waste any days!

Most people DON'T go into labor before their due date..especially 2 weeks. I say if you really want to, maybe leave one week early. If you don't have any other maternity benefits, that's 2 weeks of non-pay that you could have been working.

  • We can go on Maternity Leave - prior to our due date - and get paid STD - of course you have to use 5 days of vacation/sick leave/unpaid before STD kicks in. I only gave my self a week before I was due and next time I think I'm taking 2-3 weeks off.  I thought I was going to go stir crazy but the last week I was in and out of the doctors office and didn't really get to just rest much.

  • I guess I don't understand your STD policy.  Mine was for 8 weeks (I had a c-section) with a 7-day waiting period--the 7 days was PART OF the 8 weeks, not added on.  So my benefits paid for 7 weeks.  Period.  There was no taking off early so that I would then get paid for 8 weeks.  It had absolutely nothing to do with my due date, it all had to do with when I was deemed unable to work.  So, if my doctor had declared me unable to work a week before my scheduled c-section, that week would have been my waiting period.  I would have gotten STD for the first 7 weeks after the birth, never 8.  Does that make sense?  I guess I thought all STD policies worked this way, maybe your HR lady doesn't really understand how it works?  I know mine does not have a clue--she actually learned the details of our policy by going through the process with me.

Anyway, I worked up to the day before my c-section.  MISTAKE.  I should have at least given myself a few days of rest.  I was so freakin' busy that day I hardly got out of the office that night.  Everyone knew it was my last day, so they came to me with every question they could think of for the next 3 months!  With DD a few years ago I worked up to my induction, and again, regret it.  I was overdue and was so exhausted and in pain at work.  Don't take 2 weeks early (you'll waste your FMLA, especially if you are overdue) but at least take a few days around your due date.
