Homemade baby food= success!

Yay! I steamed carrots last night and blended them this morning, and they totally look like actual baby food! I'm so excited! This is way easier than I thought. And he ate them and liked them, which is also great :)

  • Awesome! I can't wait to make my own.

I've heard that you can add breast milk to the mixture too and then freeze them in flexible ice cube trays too.

  • My ped told us not to make carrots at home.  We've done apples, peas and sweet potatoes so far.
  • Good deal. It is super easy. I make pretty much all of Robbies food. I do buy some things that are not in season or hard to make myself.

  • I made a lot of homemade baby food.

Just an FYI - your not supposed to do carrots because of the nitrates. By baby food carrots at the store, they are tested for nitrates.

  • Why can't you make carrots at home?

I've made all of M's baby food so far, and it is a lot easier than I thought.  It's even kind of fun, I think.  :)

  • Ok, thanks. DS is 6 months, and we just started carrots, plus I use organic so I think we are fine :)

  • "Around the age of three months, an increase in the amount of hydrochloric acid in a baby's stomach kills most of the bacteria that convert nitrate to nitrite. By the time a baby is six months old, its digestive system is fully developed, and none of the nitrate-converting bacteria remain. In older children and adults, nitrate is absorbed and excreted, and Methemoglobinemia is no longer a concern."

I just gotta ask, who is feeding their 3 MONTH OLD carrots anyways???  Huh?

  • the carrot thing seems to be in flux/out for debate.   when I wsa doing it, they said no way to home made carrots.   But if that article is saying it's ok, I'd guess there's new research.

The whole carrot thing made me crazy.   How on earth are carrots a problem????   that just killed me.   one more thing to worry about.  I never thought I'd have to worry about stupid carrots!

You know what Ben really liked?  unsalted canned carrots.  They are already squishy, but also can be picked up.   I really didnt' do much in the way of purees.  He liked picking things up pretty early on.

  • cwhip, you would be amazed...a few years back I worked on a research project that involved interviewing pregnant and new moms in their homes and we heard about all kinds of crazy feeding things, including one mom who fed her two month old MEAT! It was the baby food meat, but still!
