I really dont get the obsession with..

the coming home outfit...

It seems like every time I go over to 3rd tri there are several posts about a "coming home outfit" for the baby.   I have never really given it a second thought.   I just picked an outfit from his closet and I definitely plan on having him wear it again, not just that one time...

Did/do you ladies have coming home outfits for your DC's??   Do you think this is something I will regret not putting more effort into??

I'm actually just curious if I am the only one who doesn't get it... Huh?

Re: I really dont get the obsession with..

  • We did, but I also brought like 3 different outfits in different sizes. Didn't use the one I really bought to bring him home in.  Looking back, I took think it's silly.

  •  I had one picked out and he wore it but it was huge on him. And yes he wore it again after coming home in it.

  • I agree. I was worried she would be too big for newborn clothes so I brought a bigger outfit, but I didn't care what they looked like or have a specific going home outfit. What to pack in the hospital is the other thing that gets brought up a lot on that board, which I don't get either.
  • Its ok, I don't get it either. we just picked out something warm, no one is really going to see the baby from the time we leave the hospital to the time we get home!
  • Yeah I didn't make a huge deal about it either.  I think my mom picked something from his closet and brought it.  And really, the only picture I have "coming home" he's all bundled up with blankets and stuff so you don't even see it.

  • The first outfit Isabelle ever wore was a hand-me-down from a friend. The only outfit I planned was the one for pics, but I didn't buy that one either. I don't get the obsession at all.

  • I was obsessed with it the coming home outfit for DD but I know better this time.  She was also a summer baby and didn't need the massive layers our winter babies are going to need to stay warm.  I just want him in something that is cute for pictures and FITS, more than anything.  I still need to get a premie outfit to bring to the hospital but not worried about it.

If I were having another girl, she'd wear the same coming home outfit that DD wore.  And had I thought about it more then, I'd have gotten a gender-neutral outfit (something white most likely) so that #2 could wear it too.

Oh well.  It is what it is.

  • Here is Robbies coming home picture. His outfit was so big on him and not very cute.

  • I too stressed for days about Addies coming home outfit.  How I wanted it all perfect and cute....how I would cherrish that outfit for years....yada, yada yada.  Now the outfit has been cut up into pieces that I then used to make a memory bear for Addies Bio mother and Addie herslef.  I guess the whole feelings around the coming home outfit have changed in my book too.  haha
  • I sort of had one, but didn't have it in the hospital bag when we left. So DH just picked something out of her closet. Really, it didn't matter in the end because it was really stressful getting checked out and making it home and settling in. I didn't even think about taking pictures.

  • I am with you on this, I never understood the stress of picking them out, and how dressy some of the outfits are.  I picked a white footed one piece from Gap kids, in preemie.  We picked white so future kids can wear it home too, and we didn't know babies sex.  I also bought a few gap long sleeve onsies in preemie that he wore at the hospital.  I love that gap line, and plan on buying more of it for our next one.

  • I always liked having a special outfit picked out for the baby to wear.  For me it was a time that I would always look back fondly on (and with pictures).  So, I wanted the baby to have something special to mark the occaision!  (And it usually was something they could wear again.)

  • I don't understand it either. Maybe it was/is more important if you have a house full of friends and family waiting for you and new baby's arrival at home so they can all get a glimpse or maybe for the sake of first clothed pictures??

  • It's funny, I was just thinking about this today. We already have a couple cute things in newborn size that he'll probably only get to wear a few times before he outgrows them, so I was figuring I'd just grab one of those, but then I was wondering if the outfit is supposed to be fancier, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who's not putting too  much effort into it. :)

  • I don't get it either. I just picked out a couple of things that I thought a newborn would be comfortable in and called it good. I think it's just one more thing to get new moms to spend more money.
  • So glad I'm not alone on this!!    Sounds like I wont regret it, since no one will be seeing us between the hospital and home anyways =)
  • Thanks for posting this, MrsLynch! I was getting worked up over it...I mean, how do you pick out something for someone you've never met?

So my solution...something from her closet I've purchased already, and in two sizes...preemie and newborn. A cap and call it a day.

No special outfit, not falling for baby clothes marketing ploys, and no driving myself crazy.
