Seeing a Chiropractor during pregnancy.

I am pro chiropractic for sure!  I just have never been during pregnancy.  It's been recommended to me as a good way to open things up and help the baby get into position for birth.  Any experience with it?

Re: Seeing a Chiropractor during pregnancy.

  • Me!  I saw our chiropractor almost every week or every other week throughout my pregnancy with Jack.  With Joshua I was seeing a massage therapist once a month throughout my pregnancy with him.

I don't think I could have survived through the sciatic nerve pain that I was experiencing with Jack if I wasn't see our chiro regularly.

  • I go once a week and it has been a lifesaver for me. It helps my back issues and keeps me inline for the next week. I was seeing my chiro before I became preggy and he has said he has seen great improvements even while I have been preggy to my alignment. It is especially nice when he aligns my neck.
  • I had never gone to one before, but felt like something was getting out of whack with my hip pain so I started seeing one who specializes in pregnancy. It has been a lifesaver!

She said that she plans to give me a massage as close to my EDD as possible, and that she can concentrate on certain pressure points to encourage labor if I'm interested.

  • Me! Helped me with rib pain, and then with crotch pain. It was so much better than getting a massage (more effective)

  • I'm anti-manipulation during the third trimester because it's contraindicated. (This is coming from my training, I'm a physical therapist assistant). But, other treatments, if they make you feel better are worth it.

  • I went and loved it. It really helped with some pain issues I was having.

I called my doc about it because of the pain I'm having in my leg/groin.  He said he is a big supporter of chiropractics and goes frequently himself, but he does not recommend it during second or third trimesters because of the effect it can have on blood flow to the baby.  I'm bummed because I thought it might help, but I'm listening to him since he's clearly not anti-chiro in general.

Thanks to both of you! I feel fine really.  I am more interested in getting the baby in the right position for birth!

  • I went weekly up until the week before delivery. ?I expected a lot of sciatic pain during pregnancy as I had it pre-pg, but with chiropractic care was able to avoid it. ?My adjustments were very gentle (which is my chiro's method anyway) and I really looked forward to them.

My doc and doula were both encouraging of it and never advised against it even when I was on bedrest.
