You know, I think if we can spare $750B for Wall Street, we can spare a gallon of milk for a struggling family. Or better yet, we could give the milk to Wall Street and the $750B to families...

i don't stress about WIC, but the bail outs piss me off to no end. there are people starving but you're going to give billions to corporations who made bad business decisions? really? grrrrrr......
It makes me sick. I realize that it was easier practically to inject $ into the financial system, but it didn't work and wasn't well monitored, and I would have much rather seen $ go to help people in need directly. I hope that we see some changes in the next package their working on with the new administration.
I am not a fan of the trickle-down theory.
I should say that I'm a supporter of programs like WIC, though. And I support a progressive tax system where the wealthy take on more of the tax burden.
I usually don't get involved in these converstations, and unfortunately, I don't really have time to right now to either, but really, it's not about bailing out the rich... at all. That's a simple analysis so it's the one that people grab onto, but that's hardly it.
You think there are hard times now? See what happens when Wall Street falls apart. Chaos.

Hip-I don't think it's necessarily people worried about people using WIC. I think it's an issue of hard eared tax dollars being properly used. When person X writes a check for 50 grand at the end of the year for their taxes, I would imagine that it doesn't sit well when they hear of people abusing something that is suppose to be used for people who truely need it.
I think that is what you are hearing when people complain about WIC and other programs. The complaints are not geared to those who are using it in the way it is intended to be utilized.

But generalized statements get made and people lump everyone into the same category. There are only a few bad apples...but the majority of the people don't abuse it.
I never get involved in controversy on here... I was a WIC baby myself and when the system is not abused it works great. I do not agree with the bailouts but if we did not bailout these corporations do you know how many more people would lose their jobs? The majority of employees in financial services are not making the big bucks. Believe me I know, DH and I work in the field and we did not get big huge bonuses like you read about. Also, many individuals made bad decisions by taking out loans they could not afford and then not paying them. This is what ultimately led to the financial meltdown and the bailouts. We need to hold these individuals responsible.

This concern is understandable. But why focus on the amount of money lost to abusers of programs like WIC, and not on all of the money wasted by government contractors in Iraq, for instance? Or the bailout money that is spend on bonuses for Wall Street instead of loans as intended? There are a LOT of places the government wastes money.
I really don't have a dog in the fight, but couldn't someone see the two as very similar. Not every banker/Wall Street CEO is corrupt, not every person who is on WIC is corrupt. It's the ones (in both situations) that abuse the system that give the entire group a bad name.
The amount of $$ spent on food programs vs. the amount of $$ spent on wars - not even in the same ball park!
The amount of the $$ spent on anykind of gov't aid vs the amount of $$ spent on bailing out AIG - miniscule.
Exactly. If people are concerned about the amount of money lost from abusers of government aid programs, I hope they are even more concerned about the money wasted above.
The thing is, abuses happen in the best of systems. It doesn't mean we should throw the baby out with the bath water, so to speak. If you know someone who abuses the system, don't complain about it here, report them. Sadly, there are going to be a lot more people needing government help, whether it's unemployment benefits, WIC, child care tax credits, or what have you. Hurting people in need because of a few bad apples seems short sighted. I hope I never need the help, but I pray it's there if I do.
How do you feel about the gov't bailout? Tax breaks for the rich? Tax breaks for corporations?
I'm not obsessed about getting rid of WIC but abuses do sicken me.
With that said I think all of this Govt' bail out crap is well CRAP! I had a few economic courses in college and grad school. It amazes me how stupid the govt feels we are to say "this will save the economy". It won't and can't. It is cycular and needs to play itself out. I HATE reading the WSJ and read about "stimulas" and "bailout". Both parties just want to pacify the people and it really is bull crap.
I say spend the money helping those who lost thier job, w/temporary assistance and help them find a new job. If someone is foreclosed on who lost thier home b/c they couldn't afford it... too bad. If a corporation made bad business decisions... oh well you are too dumb to survive. New companies will come and fill the gap. If a bank made bad loans... well that is how the cookie crumbles. But by rescuing bad behavior we are really rewarding bad behavior. That will only make us a weaker nation!

I think the bailouts are crap as most stand now. If GM is in such bad shape, why are they wasting advertising dollars on national radio spots promoting a vehicle that won't even go on the market until 2011 (if GM is even around then)??? Rather than bailing out industries as a whole, why not funnel the money to the businesses and corporations within the industry who HAVEN'T already mismanaged everything. Case in point: Ford is not seeking bailout dollars...they want funds available to them should GM or Chrysler go under. If GM and/or Chrysler cannot make it, go ahead and provide Ford with the resources to buy them out and turn the business around. As for the mortgage industry, why are we concerned about helping those who are losing the homes they couldn't afford in the first place? Homeowners who bought what they could afford will end up being penalized by having to pay off the remainder of their mortgages.

yeah but it wasn't ALL the people's fault for taking out loans they couldn't afford...it was the big corporations that thought it would be OK for them to have those loans....just a clarification
